From The Earth To The Moon $22.88 at Sams Club

As the title states - I just found this excellent HBO series for only $22.88 at Sams Club. Its still showing up at around $60 on Amazon.

Wish I had a Sam's Club membership (probably the only time I'll ever utter that line). I have the old original set and some of the discs have gone wonky so it needs to be replaced with the newer version.

So, this is the newer version, with the original 4x3 presentation cropped to a new anamorphic 1.78:1 aspect ratio? Um.... based on screencaps posted at the time the newer box ws released, I decided to stick with the older box.

Y'know, I think a one-year Sam's Club membership PLUS the $22.88 you'd spend on this set is less than Amazon's price. You might be able to justify it, and pick up a cheap set of tires or a 55 gal drum of mayo while you're there.

Yes, this is the new "Signature Edition". I was also aware of the aspect ratio issue but at that price it was still worth it.

So, they cut part of the picture off to make it 1.78? If so, that sucks.

It could be something like this:

Wasn't the series originally in 1.33? I couldn't imagine they presented it with that kind of quality to the picture.

IIRC, the was shown on pay cable (HBO or Showtime?) as 4X3, as the HD premium channels didn't exist then. It was not shown letterboxed when broadcase or on the first DVD set. For comparision reviews when the 2nd DVD set came out, I do remember seeing screenshots of a newspaper and part of the headline was chopped off in the newer 1.78:1 AR.

You can always get a membership, buy this set, and then cancel membership in same day for a full refund.

Ditto, when I get back, I'll report what I found...

EDIT: Found and purchased at the Shelby Twp, MI Sam's Club. Also saw The Wire: S1 for the same price of $22.88.

They only had three left.

I stopped by a Sams here in Dallas on the way home yesterday, could not find one. I asked my Dad to stop by one on his way home, and he ended up stopping by the same one for some reason, but he found three marked at 45 or something like that. Are the $23 a mispriced item? Should I get one of teh ones maked at teh high price and do a price check?

UPDATE...my Dad was just at the Sams in Southlake, TX, he found three of them. Grabbed one for me. Might be a few more sitting there. Also, no luck at the Park Lane location in Dallas.

Do they offer one-day trial memberships? I've been a member for years, so honestly not sure what their policy is...

Sometimes they have single day passes in the paper - you might try just going in to the service counter and telling them that you're considering buying a membership and would like a one day pass to check out the store. Generally those one day passes charge you an extra 10% on purchases.
