Brokeback Mountain question - contains spoiler

Spoiler for those who haven't seen it - stop reading

When Ennis calls to find out what happened to Jack - the flashback of him being beaten, did that really happen? Or was Ennis thinking of it like the story he told Jack in the beginning; about the two guys living together when he was a kid??

It's meant to be Ennis's "worst case scenario" of what happened. We don't know what actually occurred.

I wondered about that. It was so quick, but so bloody.

LOL, yes! I watched it last night

I saw Kong was on too - I figured BBM made me cry enough - don't need to cry over a big ape (again) - I'm so sappy

I *heart* BBM, as the "one and only" thread members can attest.

I think we can mostly agree that whatever really did happen, he died because of his sexual preference. Does it really matter who did it or knew?

The original story is deliberately ambiguous on the point. For Ennis, there's no doubt Jack died by the tire iron, and no doubt as to why. The truth is unknown.

Ang Lee, on the other hand, shot enough footage to make the death completely *unambiguous*, then trimmed away at it to leave the question more open again. I think the result is still too clear, but since people keep asking, maybe not.
