Sony LCD Projection TV Question re: bulb replacement - burning smell?

Just replaced the bulb in my Sony kf-42we610 set. Noticed that the plastic cover that fits over the bulb was scorched and kinda saggy looking, as if there had been a great deal of heat (over what is normally generated). I work with LCD projectors a lot at work, and haven't seen this kind of burning on them.

The set is about three years old and this is the second bulb (the first one was replaced soon after purchase due to a power surge blowing it out). I don't recall the cover being burned like this when I replaced the bulb 30 months ago.

Also, after replacing the bulb, I'm getting a slight burning smell. Is it normal to have a burning smell for a new bulb?

Thanks.
