I need Help! HD-A1 Not Playing Regular DVD's.
My Toshiba HD-A1 is not playing regular DVD's. I keep putting in a standard DVD and an error comes up and it says "HDMI Error 1" It plays HDDVD's fine, but not standard DVD's. I am not sure about the FW update it has on it, I just picked it up a few weeks ago, and am waiting for the FW disc from Tosh.
I have a new TV, receiver and this player so I am still working on the initial set up, so maybe I am doing something wrong so far?
I have this TV
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsu...oductDetail.do
This Receiver
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-WcwyTR0...0&I=580TXS674B
and
HD-A1
I have HDMI running from the DVD player to the receiver. Receiver to the TV. HDMI from the Comcast box to the TV. I still can't get standard DVD's to play. Ugh!
Also my receiver is stuck on multichannel or direct only for audio, I am not able to switch from lets say DD+ or DTS ect. it seems like those options are not available. I thought HDMI carried those signals as well along with TrueHD??
Any input is appreciated.
Sometimes I hate new technology....

As for the update, I was just going to wait for the disc, because I am being lazy because I have to hook and unhook a bunch of shit to get the cable over to the player. I got time though I should probably do it.....
Any idea on my receiver issue?
Thanks for the input

Ok I unhooked all my shit from my computer, hooked it up to the player, followed the directions. I ran the update and nothing happened, so I assume I have the latest update, because the manual said if it doesn't do anything I have the latest update. Then again there is no heads up official confirmation of that.
I tried a SD DVD and I am still getting the HDMI Error 1 error. FUCK!!! I hate new technology, hooking up shit, setting inputs, downloading updates, setting speakers, audi PCM, Bitrare... they could make this shit a little user friendly. Fuck.
Ok my rant is over, I am getting frusterated with all this I am taking a break and going to play some Guitar Hero, at least THAT is fucking working.
Anybody want to come over to my house and hook everything up for me?? Hmmmm..... anybody in the Seattle/Bellevue area?? I pay well and I have beer!!
Its not on there site. You have to either order a disc from Toshiba, or hook your player up to the net, and jump through hoops to run an update.
I Should have went Blu Ray.

M&S: HANG IN THERE!!!
Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you with this but after I posted I signed off and haven't been back on until this morning.
Anyway...This is what I did:
Firmware Update Version: 2.0
Applicable Models: HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1.
Overview:
This firmware update adds support for certain anticipated network delivered content in future HD DVD discs, improves certain video and audio processing capabilities, as well as addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related problems identified by Toshiba.
How to obtain and install the firmware update:
If you have broadband internet service you may obtain the firmware update over the internet using the Ethernet port on the back of your HD DVD Player. There are instructions for configuring the Ethernet port on pages 44-45 of the owner's manual. Page 57 of the owner's manual describes how to download the firmware update. Here is an overview of the process:
Please configure the Ethernet port. You may need to turn on DHCP and DNS. Page 45 of the user manual explains how to do this.
After you have configured the Ethernet port, follow the directions on page 57 to check for a firmware update.
If a firmware update is available for your player, it will take about 30 minutes to download and install.
PLEASE DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER TO YOUR PLAYER during the update process. Doing so could cause the player to malfunction.
If no firmware update is available, the player will quickly exit the update process.
Please refer to your owner's manual for additional details.
If you do not have an Ethernet-based broadband connection for your player or prefer not to use one, you may contact Toshiba Customer Solutions and request that a firmware update disc be sent by mail.
You can update the firmware using this update disc by following the instructions provided with the disc.
PLEASE DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER TO YOUR PLAYER during the update process. Doing so could cause the player to malfunction.
Please note that if you sent Toshiba the Firmware Update Request card included with your player, you will receive an update disc by mail from Toshiba as soon as it becomes available.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q1. What does this update do?
A1. This update adds some new features (extended support for Dolby True HD® and some network connectivity features). It also addresses some problems Toshiba has identified with HDMI/DVI connectivity and disc playback.
Q2. What are the added Dolby True HD features?
A2. Support for Dolby True HD is extended from two channels to 5.1, which will be available in full resolution on the HDMI and analog 5.1 outputs and down-mixed to a DTS bit stream on the SPDIF output.
Q3. What are the network enhancements?
A3. To help support anticipated future content from HD DVD disc publishers, support is added to accept or deny "cookies" (similar to internet browser cookies) and to specify the bandwidth available from the user's internet service.
Q4. The HDMI output does not work or works intermittently with the HDMI or DVI input on my HDTV or monitor. Does the new firmware address that problem?
A4. The firmware update addresses and improves HDMI and DVI connectivity. If you still experience problems, try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable. Make sure your display input is set to HDMI (or DVI). If your display has more than one HDMI/DVI input, make sure that all connected HDMI/DVI source devices are powered on (even if not in use). If none of these solve the problem, please turn off the TV and the HD DVD player. Check all connections. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable. Turn on the TV first and then turn on the HD DVD player. Should you continue to experience problems, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.
Q5. During HD DVD playback I sometimes experience pixelization, block noise or audio dropouts. Sometimes playback stops. Sometimes, playback is not smooth. Does the new firmware address these issues?
A5. This firmware update, which includes material from prior updates, addresses various playability issues. You should also check to be sure that the disc is clean and, if the disc will not operate at all, that you are inserting the disc with the right side up. Should you continue to experience problems, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.
Q6. When I hook up my HD DVD player to a monitor using the HDMI connection I hear a high frequency noise from the monitor when I switch on the HD DVD player's power. Does the new firmware address this issue?
A6. This firmware update, which includes material from prior updates, addresses the issue. Should you continue to experience problems, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at (800) 319-6684.
Q7. Do I need to install prior updates before installing the current update?
A7. No. The current update includes all of the prior updates.

Thanks Paul. I actually wound up doing that last night. Took a while but it was successful.
I wasn't clear in my question-I was trying to figure out where to download the ISO file. I'm not a torrent guy and know nothing about that, so it wa sjust easier for me to carry my cable modem into the HT and hook up the player.

Here it is! (I found it on the AVS forum.)
For anyone who might be looking for the ISO file or Nero thingamabobby of the 2.0 update:
Here is the ISO file.
...and Here is the Nero one, that includes links to both Toshiba's Firmware Info/Instruction Page and the A1 Owner's Manual.
Here's a pic that shows what the final result of the 2.0 firmware update should look like on your set:

!!!WARNING!!!
Sorry Folks, but I (along with the link creators) accept no responsibility what-so-ever for these files and anybody using them to flash their player does so at their OWN risk.
-THEEK!, INDEED!

I would at least try connecting your player directly to your display, just to eliminate the receiver from the equation. If the DVD works, you know it's something with the receiver.
Thanks for the pic THEEK that halped a lot, thats not what mine is showing, so I am going to have to attempt it again. I don't get it I followed the directions in the manual, but it still didn't take. Weird...Off to try it again....

Ok I am done eff'ing with the updates. What a pain in the fucking ass! How is this shit user friendly?? Setting up a proxy, Subnet Mask, Gateway NTP Server Settings? How is the average consumer suppose to grasp this, I mean I am above average when it comes to electronics, how is the normal consumer suppose to understand this?
I can't get the player to update, I am going to wait for the disc.
Next problem at hand is normal DVD's. I can't get them to play at all through the receiver. I get the HDMI Error 1 every time.
I tried what bunkaroo said and hooked it in straight to the TV, the standard DVD started to play, but I had no picture or sound, but it was playing with no HDMI error. Yet I took out that DVD and put in a HDDVD and it worked fine. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why is it playing HDDVD and not standard DVD?????

What the hell am I doing wrong here? It can't be all me, there has got to be something I am missing.

What FW are you running currently? And also, have you tried Toshiba tech support yet? There are a lot of bright and knowledgeable people on here, but I would contact tech support so they can advise you specifically as to your issues.

As I said above I am having issue running an update via the internet, so I am just waiting for the disc.
Does it work through component?
That is my next move. Its only to make sure that the player/receiver is not malfunctioning. I bought the player/receiver for its HDMI capabilities, I want to utilize thouse inputs.

I have been troubleshooting all night and still can't get regular DVD's to work. HDDVD's do still though.
I also am not able to get any sound except DD+ out of the receiver and the receiver is just saying "multichannel" and I am not able to switch to any other sound options (DTS ect)
Thanks for the support and input.

You won't get 1080P with the HD-A1 even using HDMI. The only difference between HDMI and component is the upconversion of SDVD is possible over HDMI and not component.
Does your receiver support the advanced codecs you are trying to decode VIA HDMI? I don't think it does. Over optical/coax the best you can get is DD+. Using the analog outs if your receiver has pre-ins, you can use the advanced tracks.
