It IS awesome. Here's hoping Final Solider and Solider Blade are to follow.

I've never played that... how does it compare to Blazing Lazers?

Well, Blazing Lazers was made by Compile.. who were the gods of the old-school shooter design. Other games by them included Zanac, Gun*Nac, Guardian Legend, Aleste (which include MUSHA and Space Megaforce) to give you an idea.. so Super Star Soldier is not quite as good as that game, but it's still a gem.

You guys should do a Virtual Console Challenge, like that old Mame Challenge thread. I'd do it, but I'm wii-less

Super Star Soldier is good but I really hope they will also release Soldier Blade.

I used to have a game on the NES called Star Soldier, it was an overhead space themed shooter. Is this in the same family?

Yes, but it is not even a fair comparison to think about that game when compared to its PC-Engine/TurboGrafx iterations in my opinion.

I hope they release more side-scrolling & top down shooters on the Wii such as Lifeforce (Nintendo) and Thunderforce II (Genesis).

Yeah, I still play that on emu. Would gladly pay $5 for it on VC. I had a buddy that would reset the system if he died on the first level on games like this. Games like this where you have 30 freaking lives thanks to the Konami Code. It made me want to strangle him with the controller cord.
