Recommend a HD DVD Player

If you are tight in budget which HD DVD player one should buy, without compromising much.
What I mean is since there are a couple of models available from toshiba which model will be good for someone new to jump into the HD world. Also if someone could help tell me where can I get the best deal from and what's the best price to get the HD DVD player for.

Cheers!!!

Check the bargains thread. If I were you I would go for the Toshiba HD-A1. The new model coming out is the A2 but I don't expect it to be any cheaper and it won't be out for a month or so.

Do you think buying refurbrished is safe. Also if you buy one of these players new do you also need to buy any kind of protection plans.

I've gotten refubs before. In fact, I tend to trust them even more.

I'd say wait for the A2, it's so close to release and should not have all the beta issues of the G1s.

I'm really trying to hold out until players are under $300, or there is a combo HD-DVD / BD player out.

Sometimes it's very hard!

I sure wish we knew that for real, though. I'm contemplating getting the A2, unless FW 2.1 fixes my skipping problems, but I don't know if I'd be any better off.

There will be two new players from Tosh in Dec. The HD-A2 is the successor to the HD-A1 and the HD-XA2 succeeds the the HD-XA1. The A2 is $500, the XA2 $900 (IIRC).

Other than the drive available for the Xbox 360, are there any other manufacturers that are due to release HD DVD players? I thought Panasonic was in the HD DVD camp.

No, but I sure wish there were. I'd love it if Panasonic made one, as I love their products, and have always had great results with them. The lack of hardware supporters for HD DVD is the one thing that makes me a little nervous about the format's future. There needs to be another manufacturer.

Woah! I didn't realize that. Not good news for the HD DVD format, in my opinion. I've just looked up the list of hardware supporters in the blu-ray camp (yes I'm slow on this topic), and sure enough, there's Panasonic as well as Pioneer (my current favorite for DVD hardware). The list doesn't stop there either...Philips, Samsung, Sharp, LG, Mitsubishi, etc. (I realize Sony is the main proponent behind blu-ray).

Anyone know why there's such a lack of hardware support for HD DVD players from other manufacturers?

Because like they did with the movie studios, BD sold the CE manufacturers on promises that, thus far, they have not been able to realize.

I see. I also realize that it's still early for both formats.

Thanks.

A poster over in the Hot Deals forum said that a porno site, of all places, is taking orders for the HD-A2 for only $249.50. I find this hard to believe, but I thought that I would mention it. Hey, maybe they'll throw in a couple of movies as part of the deal.

Just ordered one, and yes, they do give you a free porn with the purchase(of course you can also opt for the toy or VHS tape if your prefer)

I would think that price would mean selling it at a lost, but good luck to those that got in on the steal...err, deal.
