1)Xbox 360 (I love Halo and Gears of war looks good)
2)Wii (not sure how I feel about the controller)
3)Playstation 3 (Metal Gear 4 looks Sweet! But the machine is really expensive)

I don't really think that the Wii's price even makes it that much of a competator, most people I know, when talking about next gen consoles, say they will buy either a 360 or a PS3, but are for sure getting a Wii. If you are worried about the conroller, watch some of the Wii Experience videos on Nintendo.com, I think most people who are worried will see them, and feel ok. Also, if your an old school gamer, the Wii is almost worth it for the VC alone, my NES, SNES and others are still hooked up, and I'm looking foward to not having blow on nearly as many cartridges, just to get my Kid Icarus or my Earthbound on.

5) Wait until one stands out enough to you that you don't need to seek out assistance from strangers.
If you had a gun to my head, though, you felt the need to mention a negative for two out of the three machines. That should be a clue.

Like Drainout says, with the pricing of the 360 and PS3 vs. the Wii, it almost makes the Wii look like "Hey, I'll get one of those too." Of course, then you have to start buying games, and I am not at all impressed with the VC game pricing.
I could see a price drop for the 360 this holiday season, but it probably will be a while before the others drop.
Which has the games that look the funnest to you? In my case, very few of the games I'm aware of for the PS3 and 360 really appeal to me, especially considering the price [although I saw some mech game in the store the other day on the 360 and it looked incredible]. The Wii, both the unique control method and the game variety, are drawing my attention, but I also have a 4 year old and I think he'd like some of them.

If you can do it, I'd wait for a 360 price drop, or a bigger HDD (similar thing really). Wait and see on the wii, and definitely try it out in a store or at a friends place.

How many next gen machines will you end up owning?
As much as the PS3 looks to have some nice stuff coming up, it's coming up. The big games for it won't come out until well into 2007 (your Assassin's Creed, Gran Turismo, MGS, etc). By then it may have a price drop ($100 or so, at most although I wouldn't hold my breath). Couple that with availability problems and a very limited launch lineup and I wouldn't rush out to get a PS3.
The Wii looks fun but my guess is that like the DS, it will have a handful of standout games and it will take another year for developers to really put it to full use. As is Nintendo's strategy, the Wii is not to be a direct competitor to the 360 or the PS3. Rather, it is something extra.
The 360 right now has at least a dozen truly awesome games and because it wasn't delayed (as was the PS3), you can now get a bunch of cool titles for a good price: $20, $30, $40. If you've got only $600 to spend on a console, your choices look like this:
PS3: Console, plus 2 games or 1 game and 1 controller. (Assuming you can find it at retail).
Wii: Console plus controllers, and about 5-7 games.
360: Console, controller, three games, two Xbox Live Arcade titles.
I'd go with the 360. If you're deadset on a PS3 and can find one at MSRP, by all means get it but I don't think you'll use it to its full potential for another year.
I would definitely not "wait until there's a winner"... There is no "winner". The only "losers" in the console wars were Sega's hardware. Even if you only owned an Xbox or a Gamecube last generation they still had lots of pretty good games.

I have the 360 which I think is awesome. Personally since the super nintendo the Nintendo systems haven't been that great especially with developer support. I would hold off on getting the Wii. The PS3 on the other hand I would wait until a price drop before picking it up. Maybe next holiday season or the following. In the mean time I would get the 360 if I were you. Lot of good games out and coming out.

Another thing to think about: Do you have an Xbox, Gamecube, or PS2? I'd strongly consider getting the next-gen version of the old console you don't have. Each of the older consoles has some fantastic titles.
I myself never got a Gamecube and that's one reason I'm excited about the Wii. I plan on picking up a couple of games I've been meaning to play.

I think anyone who is in doubt should get a Wii. It's the cheapest one and will be likely have the most interesting gameplay/library. And it's not trying to be anything other than a fun game system.

Im going for the Wii (terrible name though).
I just find Im sick of all the 1st person shooters and want something fresh and so far the nintendo console is the only one that seems to offer fresh ideas.

If you really do love Halo, than a 360 is a no-brainer for you.
And Gears of War is every inch as good as it looks, if not better.

For you, based on what you described liking, you should get the 360.
For me I'm waiting, and I'll ultimately probably only buy the WII and PS3. I never got much use out of my XBox (I have lots of games for it including Halo and Halo 2 but never got into any of them).
As far as a winner: I think the consumer wins by having multiple consoles. Yeah there may be some exclusives you miss out on for a while, but in return you get better games and better machines at better prices due to competition.
