Flushed Away - review thread

Flushed Away: 78% on Rotten Tomatoes

First off, I want to say that at least the posters of this movie were a bit misleading: they make you think there's a rivalry between the guy in the tux and the fat guy. They share screentime for maybe 6 minutes of the entire movie. The movie is more about the main character's adventures in the sewers. The trailers may have explained this but the posters did an awful job.

OK, onward: While the concept of Flushed Away seems to be a bit overdone, the movie does well to rise above it. The story has been done probably about 5,405 times and it's not any more interesting this time. However, there's enough smart jokes in there that it makes the movie very viewable. None of the jokes are dated like Shrek and are done more at the expense of cultures (the French, the British, the Americans). The film retains its Aardman CGI quality and there's a very obvious effort to make it seem like stop motion: the eye and mouth movement isn't fluid and resembles that of the Aardman movies we've seen before. However, it misses some of its heart. I don't think it's the animation as much as the writing: Nick Park's involvement might have made this movie much more engaging.

My final view is that this movie's story is nothing new but it handles it in such a smart, funny way that makes it better than most animated films. Also, if you hate songs in animated movies, this one features mostly Billy Idol and Tom Jones

I'd give this movie a B-. If you want to support Aardman or quality CGI films, go see it. But it's OK to wait for it on video, too.

I thought this movie was fun, it had far much more appeal than the disappointing 'Cars'. Humour for both the kids and the adults. Once I got over and accepted the slew of scenes where varying characters get thwached in the pelvic region the movie became more enjoyable. As in 'Curse of the Wererabbit' there are a ton of visual jokes - freeze framing the DVD gonna's be fun!

... and any film with a Tom Jones song is a good thing

I saw it and thought the movie was a total bombardment of jokes and gags. Some were funny but I got bored very quickly and so did my wife. It was too much to digest in such a small amount of time.

I enjoyed it a lot. Maybe not as much as Cars, but I had a lot of fun. I appreciated a lot of the references in the film. I thought all the French jokes were great.

Just saw it and loved it. Much better than "Cars" (which I also loved). And a MILLION times better than "Monster House". Which I thought sucked. Terrible animation and boring. Can't believe that got an Oscar nomination and "Flushed Away" didn't. I also can't believe crap like "A Shark's Tale" and "Madagascar" made a fortune and this was a box-office under achiever.

Out of all these I've only seen A Shark's Tale and Flushed Away is vastly superior.

My second favorite animated flick of '06 (behind Monster House), vastly superior to Cars and Happy Feet (which was unbearable). The beginning is a bit rough, but once he's in the sewer it's a blast. Enjoyed the constant gags and references.
