What movie studios support HD-DVD/BD?
I just curious what studios support which format or both? Is Lions Gate a Sony company? I like the horror movies they put out, but I don't have plans for a Blu-Ray player.

Disney is also rumored to be jumping into HD-DVD but that one is much less concrete than the rumors surrounding Lionsgate. FOX and Sony are not jumping anytime soon and since Fox is in charge of MGM dist. right now that locks those three up. Universal is not jumping to BD anytime soon either though. Universal is so big they can rival the other three studios combined so there is no real good solution right now. I have HD-DVD.

Wow, I didn't realize the list of major studios had consolidated down to so few.

Lions Gate is said to start releasing on HD DVD before Christmas.
Hopefully that's correct.
Sony is said the be busting Disney's balls to try to prevent them from following through on their decision to support HD DVD... there's a lot of tension in that one, but if Bluray doesn't conquer the landscape before Christmas, then Disney HD DVD support is almost certain to be announced at CES in January...

UNIVERSAL: King Kong (HD DVD exclusive)
WARNERS: Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Harry Potter 4, The Matrix Trilogy
NEW LINE: LOTR
PARAMOUNT: Mission: Impossible Trilogy, Star Trek Collection
FOX: X-Men Trilogy, Die Hard Trilogy, Alien films (BD exclusive)
DISNEY: Animated films, ie Finding Nemo, etc. (BD exclusive)
SONY: Spiderman 1 & 2 (BD exclusive)
Obviously, some of these aren't even announced, but I think they have a good chance of being released within the next year or 2.

I really hope Lionsgate starts releasing on HD DVD soon. If Fox starts releasing neutral titles, and LG makes the jump, we might have a very short format war on our hands.
Beuna Vista has stated that they will not release on HD DVD so it looks like Disney is BD for now. However, if Fox, and LG make the jump, don't expect Beuna Vista to fall behind. I just hope the first domino falls (Lionsgate) and Fox follows soon after.

How HD-DVD can win with all of those studios supporting Blu-Ray is if HD-DVD supporters continue to rally behind it and put pressure on the BD-only studios to at least support both formats. Honestly, there's been so much wishy-washy support (or lack thereof) since CES it's been really disappointing.
Universal and Warner Bros. both control the two largest film libraries in the world. HD-DVDs have also - for the most part - been VERY generous with special features, whereas BD has not. HD-DVD has introduced the Combo disc, which is a bit controversial, I suppose, but I am really sold on the idea that you can take it anywhere. HD-DVD - from the beginning - offered terrific quality machines and software, and at rather affordable price points (at least as far as new technologies). HD-DVD continues to better itself: driving hardware prices down and expanding its capabilities (triple layered discs!), whereas BD has only recently begun delivering on some of its earliest promises (dual-layered discs). HD-DVD has delivered on new levels of interactivity (IME) and advanced audio codecs where BD has been sluggish and inconsistent. And then there's attitude. The predominant attitude driving BD is one of sheer arrogance and hostility, where HD-DVD has for the most part just quietly kept delivering quality, consistency, and (relative) affordability.
Now, I'm certainly not the loudest voice on these pages, nor do I pretend to know all there is to know about these two formats, but what I've seen and experienced from the two has only cemented my support for HD-DVD. I DO believe HD-DVD can win, and I definitely hope that it does. Silence won't help, though, so if you're a supporter, speak up! Sign the petitions! Write to the studios! And -- of course -- speak with your dollars.
We CAN win.
