Night of the Living Dead - 3D
I just saw the trailer for this before the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequal. I didn't even know this movie was in production. Do we really need yet another remake of the grand-daddy of all zombie flicks ??
I'm not sure how the entire 3D thing is going to work. This movie has disaster written all over it, but I'm sure I'll probably check it out eventually.
Anyone else catch the trailer ?? Thoughts ??

there wasn't a trailer before the screening of TCM: The Beginning I attended:
here's the film's website:
Night of the Living Dead 3D
I would assume this a standard 35mm film not DLP. Wonder if this will go out polarized or in anaglyph?

When does it come out?
I checked around the website but all i could find was the qoute in the Q&A saying Jan of '06, which was almost a year ago...
WHEN WILL THE FILM BE RELEASED?
JB: We’re finishing post now. The plan is for the film to be released theatrically in several markets in late January 2006.

I saw the film about a month ago at the World 3-D Film Expo II. It was projected digitally in polarized, clear glasses format. The director and cast members were there.
It wasn't half bad, really. I was expecting some DTV John Russo type dreck, but this actually looked good considering it's a very low budget project. I would have liked to have seen more gore, but the makeup was good. It's not a scene for scene remake this time, which I appreciated.
It's not tremendously gimmicky like the 80's 3-D film were; though there are a few such shots in there, like blood and bullets coming off the screen. My favorite use of depth was a long shot of the house in the background and zombies on all different levels coming all the way into the foreground.
Unfortunately, the general release version is being released in red/cyan anaglyph. As I said I saw the clear glasses, polarized version so I don't know how well the anaglyph conversion will look; but the 3-D pictures on the films website will give you some idea I suppose. I think the anaglyph idea is really stupid. I wish they would simply hold off the release and wait for more RealD set ups to be installed and go out polarized instead. There are quite a few new 3-D movies in production (aside from the animated CGI flicks) and they could get a decent release if they held off for another few months.
They mentioned the DVD version would include 3-D; of course I'm sure they mean anaglyph but it would be nice if they included a field sequential version as well or at least offered is seperately for those who have shutter glasses.
I'll check out the anaglyph version in theatres for comparison's sake I guess. It opens regionally (mostly in the Southwest US) on November 10th.

WTF? George Romero is not even involved with this one? C'mon why bother?

That's a common, but very incorrect, misconception. All the principals involved in the original (Romero, Russo, et al) have their rights firmly intact (have for a few years now), although George has been "persuaded" (read: PAID) to allow Russo, Streiner, and others to have some leeway with the license.

They lost the film because they didn't stamp the end of the credits

As I said earlier in this thread I saw this movie a couple of months ago in Los Angeles, in polarized (clear glasses) projection. I was fairly impressed with it; it had nice depth and used the process pretty well.
This past Friday, I saw the general release version, which is being distributed in the horrible red/blue anaglyph format. This version is a disaster! Literally painful to watch, the red side was way too dark, and the image was full of ghosting, fringing and was generally very ugly and blurry. Shots which were pretty cool in the polarized version, like squirting blood, were almost impossible to even make out in this red/blue nightmare.
They really blew it by releasing it this way. I wish they had just sat on the film for a few more months and sent it out in Real D digital polarized projection. They are shooting for 500 screens to be ready in March in time for Disney's MEET THE ROBINSONS and 1000 by this time next year, so it isn't impossible they could have had a fairly wide release. Even the anaglyph version only opened in 300 theatres. I guess they feel it is just too expensive to get the digital files made for a wide release, as this is a very low budget film.
Bottom line, the polarized version has great depth, normal color and is great fun. This downconverted red/blue version should be avoided at all costs, unless you want to pay $10 to get a major pain the eyeballs. Go see a Real D or IMAX 3-D film instead.

I'd rather see the people behind the Dawn of the Dead remake take a crack at Day of the Dead next. Then, if that turns out well, redo the original in a way that segues nicely into the events of the Dawn remake. I know a lot of people hated the remake - and certainly it doesn't hold a candle to the original - but I really enjoyed it none the less. What it lacked thematically it kind of made up for in action and intensity. It was fun, put it that way. If they can do the same thing with Day, then I'm more than happy.
