The scariest one for me is Blair Witch Project. If you imaging what it would be like if you were there and that stuff was happening makes it scarier. Especially since they don't show the witch, it is just sounds and stuff they find that make it creepy.

Movies where you see the monster have never really been that scary to me.

Given the 3 that you selected, it's VERY possible that we have radically different tastes. So this may be of little value to you. Still:

The Changeling
The Exorcist
Alien
Halloween
The Haunting (1963)
Salem's Lot (1979)

The only movie that I can think of that has ever made me jump is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Specifically, it is the scene where Leatherface emerges from the darkness of the record room with the chainsaw roaring. The scene still makes me jump because I find it so jarring.

JEEZ. you need to see some films from the last century OP.

agree with the changeling, the haunting and halloween.

exorsist 3 is very underrated. IMO the best of them.
the vanishing while not scary is quite distubing.
night of the living dead. original of course.

actually i'd like to add rosemarys baby, m, peeping tom and freaks.
not jump out of you seat scares but really good films that leave you feeling a bit edgy after. i'm probably the only one but i really do not like any hitchcock film.

Sadly, Signs frightened me the hell out when I saw it in the theatre. Our fellow attendees were right there with us, too, and we all jumped a mile high at the same time during the "birthday party footage" scene. The surround sound during the "attic noises/house invasion" scene was incredible, too, and un-nerved me to no end. Good times

When my GF and I saw The Blair Witch Project at the theatre, she honestly could not face the screen at the very end. I've never seen anyone so visibly disturbed at the movies (we're getting married Saturday, w00t!).

The Shining just messes with you, and the scene with the guy in the dog suit just...I don't know, it scared the hell out of me, it was so downright freaky.

Halloween. Also check out the orginal Texas Chainsaw Massacre, much better than the re-make. Leatherface, the 3rd TCM movie, scared the crap out of an ex-girlfriend of mine.

Scariest movies of all time (to me):

Halloween
The Shining
The Exorcist

Everything else is just an also-ran.

I'll also throw in The Descent, which was the last film that I thought was frightening. The region 1 disc should be out by year's end.

The Thing

Great list, but you left off Carpenter's The Thing! Although The thing may be too gory for the OP's taste.

Most of the films I would have picked have already been suggested but some of my favourite scary movies haven't been mentioned which are New York Ripper, When A Stranger Calls (1979 version), The Omen, Damien:Omen 2, The Wicker Man (1973), Opera, Stendhal Syndrome. Plus I'd just like to put in another good word for one of the most under-rated horror classics (and one of my favourite John Carpenter movies) Prince Of Darkness.
