Superman: The Movie & Donner Cut ALSO coming to HD-DVD and Blu-ray

Just saw a press release from Warners, and it has box covers of HD-DVD versions of both Superman: The Movie and Superman II: The Donner Cut as coming soon.

Also, here's a sneak peek at the Donner Cut:

Surprised that the "regular" superman 2 isn't on there.

Me too. This whole release (for both HD and standard DVD) is just strange. I don't understand the lack of concrete info. They've known about this release for *years*.

Curious about Superman: the Movie... the SD DVD is 4-discs. Wonder what HD DVD is getting from that set... Can't wait for the official info!

I'm pretty sure that'll be released on HD-DVD. Especially if the Donner cut gets released on the format.

What are you waiting for? The 1st gen player is available for well under 400 bucks. And there are a number of huge titles announced for release in the next 2 months. Batman Begins, T3, at least 3 Superman movies, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Mummy, King Kong, and Hulk are just a few.

1) I just bought an Oppo 970 that I'm very happy with.
2) The Toshiba doesn't do PAL and it's not region-free. (I know I can just keep both)
3) My TV is a Toshiba 51H83. It's a few years old, a RPTV, and is sorta HD-Lite in it's own right, I'm not sure upgrading to this player will "blow me away" enough to spend that $400.

Let me alleviate that concern right now. There’s nothing “lite” about RPTVs – in fact, I prefer them in many ways to new tech. I have a 46H84 and the Toshiba A1 looks unbelievable on it.

You have a DVI input on this, correct? If so, you’re good to go.

I have a 46" CRT RPTV and HD DVD looks breathtaking on it. You will get your money's worth out of the HD-A1. I'm only hooking it up through component right now.

If they do a 2-disc HD-DVD set, they can realistically squeeze everything from the 4-disc SD-DVD release onto it. Even at a list price of presumably $39.99, that's still a damn good deal.

I have a Toshiba 50H81 which is probably older than your set. HDdvd looks awesome on it.

I'll second what bboisvert said. I have a Toshiba 65H80 RPTV from 2001 and couldn't be happier so far with my HD-A1 (through component hookups as well). Upconverting capabilities would be nice, but is not a big deal to me at this point. You won't regret the HD-A1 or AX-1.

I have a 65" Mitsubishi CRT RPTV and the HD-A1 is a spectacular picture. I have a DVI mod coming for it and I'm keeping this baby until it croaks. In the meantime I'm burning my favorite discs to DVD-R to upconvert them through component.

I have the exact same set-up, but my Mits. is a 55". I'm extremely happy with the quality I see from my HD-A1. Beats the hell out of Cable HD, that's for sure.

Its really hard to beat a properly calibrated CRT as far as black levels and so on. They are just so damn big!!

I have a 55" Mitsubishi CRT RPTV and HD DVD on it is easily the best picture I've ever seen on any display outside of a movie theater or planetarium. There is nothing "HD lite" about CRT RPTV. In fact, it has the best blacks/color reproduction of any of the technologies out there (except CRT Front Projection).

As for Superman, if they don't release the theatrical cut of II, I'll just go ahead and buy the 14 disc set. I'll probably buy it anyway because it looks too damn nice to pass up.
