Sven Nykvist has died.

I don't think anyone's posted this yet...

One of the greatest cinematographers in film, Sven Nykvist has passed away at 83.

Sven was one of the best ever. His work with Bergman was legendary.

Wow. That is so sad. The world is a worse place without him. A true artist. He will be missed.

One of my favorite cinematographers (along with Haskell Wexler and Conrad Hall). He's left us a lifetime of images that never cease to amaze us.

Quite possibly the greatest ever. Criterion has an obit up:

Sven Nykvist, 1923-2006
Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman’s cinematographer for almost thirty years, died Wednesday, September 20, after a long battle with aphasia. First hired by Bergman to work on 1954’s Sawdust and Tinsel, Nykvist then went on to be the Swedish filmmaker’s principal director of photography on twenty classic films, including The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, The Silence, Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Scenes from a Marriage, The Magic Flute, Autumn Sonata, Cries and Whispers, and Fanny and Alexander, the last two for which he won Academy Awards. Over the course of his impressive and eclectic career, Nykvist also created unforgettable images for such other filmmakers as Roman Polanski, Andrei Tarkovsky, Woody Allen, Volker Schlöndorff, Louis Malle, Alan J. Pakula, Phillip Kaufman, Liv Ullmann, and Bob Fosse. Nykvist was 83 years old.

Rest in peace, Mr. Nykvist. If heaven ever wants to release a promotional video, they've certainly got the right man for the job now.

I've only seen 2 of his movies.

For those who were as confused as I was...

One of the best, especially for his work with Bergman. Too bad his sole Tarkovsky credit is that embarrassment The Sacrifice.
