12. The Deer Hunter: There has been some criticism of details in the film, such as the hunting scenes supposedly taking place in the Alleghenies of Western Pennsylvania. While the native deer in Pennsylvania is the white-tailed deer, the characters are hunting Elk in the film. The rocky, mountainous terrain portrayed in the film is actually located in the Cascades mountain range in Washington state (Mount Shuksan can clearly be seen in the background of some of the hunting scenes). As these scenes in the film were a major theme (hence the title), the setting error is glaringly noticeable by residents and anyone who has been through the region.

THE CONTROVERSY While the film was seen by some as a masterpiece (and earned Lee a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nom), others blasted the director as irresponsible, predicting that the film's shocking climax — in which Mookie (Lee) hurls a trashcan through a storefront window, inciting a riot — would evoke similar reactions from urban moviegoers. Thankfully, the film proved to be more of a catalyst for heated debate than a flashpoint for actual violence.
