VENICE, Italy - Jackie Chan has seen enough action.

The Hong Kong star told Press Association in Venice that he wants to be more than a martial arts master — and is ready for another challenge.

"I've been willing to change my roles for quite some time. I'm fed up with these roles," the 52-year-old actor was quoted as saying. "We all know that the life of an action movie actor is quite a short career. I already consider myself a myth for still being around today."

"I want to put myself to the test by interpreting and acting different characters," he said. "I would like people in (the) future to see my movies and consider me an actor who can act in action movies, not just someone who knows about martial arts and happens to be an actor."

Chan — whose screen credits include "Shanghai Noon" and "Shanghai Knights" — presented his latest movie, "Rob-B-Hood," at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.

"When people come up to me in the street in America they say `Ah, Jackie Chan!' and do all the action moves," he said. "No one does that to Robert De Niro."

Well, unfortunately, all of his movies have sort of had some kung fu sequences. I know he really would like to fashion himself after Buster Keaton, but I don't think Chan can ever seperate himself from those performances unless he were to do just a serious role. Physical comedy just lends itself to his acrobatic talents and will be misconstrued as kung fu.

Also makes me wonder what they will write for him and Jet Li in their American film.

After watching Police Story 5, he needs to stick to his martial arts role. His alcoholic character was laughable. Now Jet Li on the other hand, can act.

He acts pretty good in them cartoon he's in, although he sounds a little different.

I never liked Jackie Chan for his martial arts, but for his near death stunts. That is what he will be known for.

You mean Jackie Chan Adventures? Well, the real Jackie doesn't perform "Jackie's" voice in the cartoon, I believe thats James Tse.

i don't know what i will do with no more martial arts movies from jet li and jackie chan. watch tony jaa i guess.

A Jackie movie without Fighting and stunts is like having a Jessica Alba movie and keeping her wrapped from head to tow like a Muslim woman throughout.

I watched Jackie for the stunts. Over the years he has had some damn creative stunts and many that have lead to me say "How the hell did he do that?"

I'm just glad he stopped making moronic American films like "The Tuxedo". None of his movies were high art...but "The Tuxedo" was awful.

I agree "The Tuxedo" was utter pants. I liked Rumble In the Bronx, Who Am I, Accidental Spy though.

I respect the man's decision to want to do more. However, his speaking parts usually don't go over too well.

But man, can the guy sing!!!

It will be difficult for Jackie Chan fans to accept him starring in other genre of movies, besides action/adventure, and action/comedy.

A) Rob-B-Hood was the worst movie I've ever seen from Chan. Just awfully acted, directed and written.

B) Jackie hasn't seen anything De Niro has done for the past decade, has he?

Love Jackie Chan films...but yeah, he best stick to what works (although how much longer can he do them ?)

If you can do something different and do it well then more power to ya...but I get annoyed with performers who don't like what they got famous and rich from... if ya don't like it so much then just stop altogether.

And I don't like it when a celebrity talks crap like that, but continues to do the same flicks. Since this thread's original post in 2006, Chan has done Rob-B-Hood, Rush Hour 3, Kung Fu Panda, and The Forbidden Kingdom.

he probably said it to try to get the ball rolling to do different roles. when that didn't happen, and probably got a lot of fan mail saying "you're the greatest, you don't need to be an 'actor'," he decided he'd stick to what makes him money.

He's having a longer and better career than Buster Keaton.

Jackie is a long way from playing one of the waxworks.
