Tears of the Sun Review - Blu-Ray

Quick highlight:
[Insert manditory Choo-Choo]
Quick highlight:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment presents 'Tears of the Sun' in 2.40:1 widescreen and 1080p video, as per usual on Blu-ray. However, while the format has suffered its share of critical slings and arrows ever since its launch earlier this summer (and I've been among some of the most vocal), I can honestly say this is the first transfer I've seen on the format that has totally and unequivocally blew me away. Maybe it is just because my expectations were unfairly lowered these past weeks, but I really thought this is among the best high-def I've yet seen, and frame-per-frame, it is certainly an equal with anything I've yet reviewed on HD DVD.

Don't get too happy. That's one title so far.
Plus there's no director's cut plus 3 featurettes are gone.
Not that it's a big deal but it should be mentioned.
I would really like to see what happens by the end of the year when Fox puts out their Blu-Ray stuff. So far most of what Blu-Ray has put out has been shit.
HD-DVD hasn't been that much better either but they still have done a better job with their releases so far.

Ive never watched an extra on any dvd ive had in my entire life, so to some its important, but to me its just wasted space. I prefer uncompressed lossless sound over extras.

What does this say about Sony's earlier work -- that they just didn't care enough to do better?

The Bus:

To be fair, this is a good thing, as it shows MPEG-2 on BD25 can actually look great. On the other hand, as someone mentioned, it comes at the expense of extras, and this truly shows that Sony doesn't give one crap about the consumer. If HD DVD weren't there to light a fire under their ass, Tears of the Sun would have looked like The Fifth Element.

Key: BD25 = Blue
Two suggested titles:
- Breakdown of 25GB BD discs vs. 50GB BD discs
- Percent of current BD discs that are not worth owning

Although the quality of the movie has gone up, they're not releasing them with complete extras, etc. Thus, IMHO, i wouldn't buy them even if I DID own a BD player.
And fyi, i'd say the same thing about HD DVD. Luckily I haven't had to thus far.

Everyone has to decide for themselves what makes a release worth owning, though for me it's primarily the movie, then the PQ/AQ, and only occasionally extras/packaging. Of the currently released BDs I can see myself picking up around 5, which is a pretty high percentage compared to the number of DVDs I own vs the total released.

If I were you, I would wait until you have some good releases that are BETTER quality than HD-DVD or AT LEAST have exclusive special features (if this will ever happen).
At that point, I would consider getting a BD player (even at $1000).

If none exist on a release, I would expect the price to be lower than one with special features. Look at MI3, the HD-DVD version will have IME and will be VC-1....yet, the BD version is the same price?? Bullshit!

The BD releases have multi-dip written all over them: lack of extras (in some cases NO extras), sub par PQ...

Of course Blitz will probably say that Amazon is clearancing out the HD-DVD version since its cheaper.
