Tears of the Sun Review - Blu-Ray

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/tearsofthesun.html

Quick highlight:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment presents 'Tears of the Sun' in 2.40:1 widescreen and 1080p video, as per usual on Blu-ray. However, while the format has suffered its share of critical slings and arrows ever since its launch earlier this summer (and I've been among some of the most vocal), I can honestly say this is the first transfer I've seen on the format that has totally and unequivocally blew me away. Maybe it is just because my expectations were unfairly lowered these past weeks, but I really thought this is among the best high-def I've yet seen, and frame-per-frame, it is certainly an equal with anything I've yet reviewed on HD DVD.

Don't get too happy. That's one title so far.

Plus there's no director's cut plus 3 featurettes are gone.

Not that it's a big deal but it should be mentioned.

I would really like to see what happens by the end of the year when Fox puts out their Blu-Ray stuff. So far most of what Blu-Ray has put out has been shit.

HD-DVD hasn't been that much better either but they still have done a better job with their releases so far.

One good review and Blitz goes crazy. Still issues since it is missing Special Features.

Stargate will also excellently received. But alas, thats not the point. MPEG2 and only 25gb, and a 2 hour movie looks stunning with uncompressed audio to boot. Rivals anything HD-DVD has to offer, and they are using 5 more gigs and a more advanced codec for Sound AND Video. Pretty much puts down all the negative bs thats been said by most hd-dvd fanatics. As ive said earlier, it just gets better from here.

Ive never watched an extra on any dvd ive had in my entire life, so to some its important, but to me its just wasted space. I prefer uncompressed lossless sound over extras.

Wow! It's just as good as HD DVD and for only $500 more!

What does this say about Sony's earlier work -- that they just didn't care enough to do better?

Exactly. You can expect a better re-release with additional special features and BD-50.

Congratulations! 8.33% of the titles look as good as the $500 cheaper alternative!

That's not fair...

There's far too much "not crap" in there.

And again, in all seriousness, they've gotten one good release...at the expense of a bunch of extras. Gee...

I thought the advantage of BD was more extra features and more capacity. The "more capacity" being used for even more advanced extra features. Yet they can't even fit all the current special features from the SD DVD versions. I like having all the features ported over so I can retire the SD DVD version w/o losing anything.

With HD DVD we can get both, though.

Can you make a pie chart comparing the amount of current BD-25 and BD-50 titles?

To be fair, this is a good thing, as it shows MPEG-2 on BD25 can actually look great. On the other hand, as someone mentioned, it comes at the expense of extras, and this truly shows that Sony doesn't give one crap about the consumer. If HD DVD weren't there to light a fire under their ass, Tears of the Sun would have looked like The Fifth Element.

Here's one:

Key: BD25 = Blue

Two suggested titles:
  • Breakdown of 25GB BD discs vs. 50GB BD discs
  • Percent of current BD discs that are not worth owning

Before Blitz, Jay or Burnt go nuts, I would say this is accurate.

Although the quality of the movie has gone up, they're not releasing them with complete extras, etc. Thus, IMHO, i wouldn't buy them even if I DID own a BD player.

And fyi, i'd say the same thing about HD DVD. Luckily I haven't had to thus far.

Everyone has to decide for themselves what makes a release worth owning, though for me it's primarily the movie, then the PQ/AQ, and only occasionally extras/packaging. Of the currently released BDs I can see myself picking up around 5, which is a pretty high percentage compared to the number of DVDs I own vs the total released.

Agreed...BUT...if they're hoping to eventually win over the "general public" with HD releases, they're going to have to offer MORE than what they have on SD-DVD and not less. That's the point.

Releasing a mediocre movie with some extras and pic/audio quality equal to hd-dvd gets you excited?? Wow, your easily excited then.

If I were you, I would wait until you have some good releases that are BETTER quality than HD-DVD or AT LEAST have exclusive special features (if this will ever happen).

At that point, I would consider getting a BD player (even at $1000).

Whether you like extras or not, a huge point to the increased size of these discs was to be able to provide a plethora of special features.

If none exist on a release, I would expect the price to be lower than one with special features. Look at MI3, the HD-DVD version will have IME and will be VC-1....yet, the BD version is the same price?? Bullshit!

Adding insult to injury, the HD-DVD version is $13 cheaper (right now) on Amazon than the Blu-Ray.

As opposed to compressed lossless sound plus extras? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Are you aware of what the term "lossless" means?

That was what I meant. I was originally going to rent not buy HD DVDs for a while, but when they started coming out with all the special features ported over I decided to go ahead and start buying. With all the extras ported and the wonderful PQ I felt like I could sell my DVD versions since I wouldn't be giving anything up. We had DD+ and now we're getting TrueHD 5.1 so that's a big plus, too.

The BD releases have multi-dip written all over them: lack of extras (in some cases NO extras), sub par PQ...

Yeah, the boxset is....the single version of 3 is also cheaper though by a couple dollars (24.99 versus 27.99).....very odd.

Of course Blitz will probably say that Amazon is clearancing out the HD-DVD version since its cheaper.
