No. It was matted to 1.85:1 theatrically.

kurtla, if it bothers you, never fear, there is a 1.85:1 anamorphic release (2-disc Special Edition, to boot) coming later this year.

In an interview with Doug Slocome, (DP, asst DP?) on THE SHINING, he stated it was filmed intended to be seen 1:85 period.
Also, an often seen photo on the net, showing behind the scenes shooting, reveals the movieola/playback monitor used while filming, and it is clearly marked off at 1:85, with a "safe area" also marked off for Network TeeVee. (which would show it P&S or un/matted)
This was very likely true on other shoots of SKs films-we just have not yet heard from the DPs...
Old wives tales die hard, but the "Kubrick prefered 1:33" is dead.
To wit:
Dr Strangelove, which, for all intents and purposes, was filmed at 1:33 with a sliver here and there making it perhaps 1:40, was turned into a nice 16:9 DVD at 1:85 by Columbia;
And after years repeating, by rote "This is how SK prefered it"
WB and/or Vitali have changed their tune,
and are putting out remastered 16:9 widescreen transfers of all of his films next year, and to keep the lemming-like "purists" happy, the flip side of the disc will still be "the way SK prefered it" (sic) flat, unmatted, P&S or academy. whatever.

It's unmatted, not P&S.
I did catch an HD broadcast of "Full Metal Jacket" this past weekend at 1:78:1. To me, this film looks far better at 1:37:1, so I'm hoping that both aspect ratios are presented on the next release of this film, just as Seashellz notes for the upcoming release of "The Shining".
