Experimental rock. Almost defies categorization. Like Tago Mago, but enjoyable to listen to.
Indie pop or pop.
I like to think of indie not as "independent label" but as "independent (not dependent) on the general trends and sounds of most other current music".

I hate 'labels', but I call it all 'good music' - especially The New Pornographers, who have consistently put out some of the most lyrically rich pop songs I've heard in a long while.
But I suppose it would all fall under the big heavy wool blanket of indie alternative.

I love Sigur Ros,
Usually, I don't know how a store will categorize what I'm looking for, so I check out Electronic, Indie, Punk, Gothic, World, etc to find things like Sigur Ros, Nitin Sawhney, Talvin Singh, Telepopmusik, The Notwist, Mogwai, Juno Reactor. They seem to fall into different areas, dependin on where you go. I just call them innovative.

If you're making a mixed CD out of those bands, the title of the disc should be called:
Great Fuckin' Music: And If You Disagree, You're a Moron.
[I've seen Sigur Ros and Go! Team twice in person. Cut Copy (not But Copy) and Rogue Wave (sadly) once.]
According to Tower Records, all of the artists you have mentioned are located in the "ROCK/POP" section.

Imogen Heap and Nada Surf are quite different, but I'm using "Hide and Seek" and "Popular" as examples from my brain. Hide and Seek is one of my new favorite songs in my 'Chill' folder, I found it on Ministry of Sound's Chillout Sessions.
I've never heard of the rest.
