J Dilla (aka Jay Dee): Donuts - 2/7/06

The new instrumental hip-hop album from Jay Dee comes out today. He's produced tracks for Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli, etc. I liked the 3 or 4 songs posted on his Myspace page, but I don't know if it's worth picking up. The majority of the tracks are under 2 minutes, and the CD is $13.99 at Best Buy and $12.99 at Circuit City. Does anyone have this, or has anyone heard the full album?

I loooove Jay Dee's production on Like Water for Chocolate, and to a lesser extent his stuff with Slum Village.

What did he produce for 2CQ?

I got this album, haven't heard it yet...

He produced some songs for their two newer albums, "Beats, Rhymes & Life" and "The Love Movement."

Man, I just read about this on another site.

Hip-hop died for me today, we lost this amazing talent way too soon.

This is too bad. As big a name as he's been in hip hop (underground especially) with the Common album, Ghost's Fishscale, and Donuts, he was about to blow up nationally. Too bad he won't get to see it.

SOHH's saying it was lupus. What a shock. Honestly he was a classic producer with a style that was so necessary for hip-hop. RIP.
