Wanna hear a snippet of the new stuff by the Cars?

Here ya go and it comes with a little promo vid action:

http://www.concerts.com/demofiles/Cars%20SP35730.mpg

This is from the Cars MySpace page (I think, www.myspace.com/carsofficial. Someone on another list posted the above link and it loads easier than from MySpace.

What do you guys think? Hard to tell from that but I'm willing to hear more.

that sounded very retro and good, but is that Todd? If so, he's ripping quite well on Ric.

No kidding...I could have swore that was Ocasek.

I hadn't heard anything about "The New Cars" project until this post. Found this Billboard article for those who may be interested:

I love the Cars! I remember listening to my little clock radio for hours when I was a kid hoping they'd play "Let's Go". Can't wait for the new stuff! It is too bad Ben Orr died, though...

Here's a post from a music list I'm on:

I was lucky enough to attend a short performance by this new Cars line-up
Monday night in Burbank. Despite whatever misgivings you might have about
the mish-mash of bands (Cars, Tubes, Todd/Nazz), they sounded GREAT. Elliot
Easton plays guitar like nobody's business. And Todd brings a level of rock
'n' roll energy to the band that Ric didn't. Don't get me wrong, I love the
original Cars, but live they were like zombies. I got a chance to talk with
Greg Hawkes (Cars keyboardist), and he pointed out his original keyboards
he's still using from the original recording sessions. He's a cool guy.

And Benjamin Orr was my favorite of the Cars, so him not being there is
definitely a weird thing. But all in all, if this new incarnation does make
it on the road this summer, I'm so there.

So THE CARS are reforming without their 2 lead singers who sang their hits.

I gotta say..WOW! I REALLY dissed this whole project on the last thread, but after seeing/hearing that snippet, I'm much more intrigued, and will DEFINITELY be checking it out. Todd was pretty good as a "Ric imitator", though obviously not as good as the original, and the rest of the band sounded great!

I'd be excited as anyone if the Cars did something more.. but with Ben no longer around, there should not be a band called the Cars doing new material. And the fact it's without Ric makes it an even bigger scam. I have nothing against them playing together, or even playing Cars material, but to call themselves the Cars with almost half the members is just trying to cash in on peoples' ignorance.

That said, the song bit wasn't bad, and I may give them a chance.

Sounds good, and as a big new wave fan I'm all for anything that sounds like that (best music ever, IMO), but I still think it's odd that you have a well-known artist fronting the obscure background members of a formerly well-known group and even more odd, doing an imitation of the original front man.

I remember reading Todd Rundgren's interview when he agreed to do this. It was all about needing the money and cashing in. Something I never thought I'd here from this artist. If these guys had a shred of integrity, they would just go out as a new band. Instead they are like Creedence Clearwater Regurgitated.

This Cars has no wheels.

Todd's band Utoptia did an entire album ripping off the Beatles called Deface the Music. They even ripped off a Beatles cover art. So it's not so far fetched for him.

I've heard that they've had a hard time getting any work done in the studio. Apparently Rundgren just wants to bang on his drum all day.

You should change your name. The real Groucho was funny.

I didn't view that one as a rip off but more as an homage. Same thing on the second side of Faithful where he did Beatles, Hendrix and Beach Boys songs.

Who agrees with me that they should call the band NazzCar?

I wasn't really interested in hearing the reformed band, but I have to admit the snippet sounds pretty damn good...
