Do you get SAD when Finishing Watching a previously Unseen TV series on DVD ?

especially the ones which have been cancelled !

I mean watching tv series you never previously seen before.

I watched all 5 seasons of the Sopranos and was so sad when i had gone through them all, i know there is supposed to be more Sopranos.

Now i've just gone through all 6 seasons of Oz and was very sad when it finished.

When you watch so much of one tv show in a short period of time, you really get involved with the show, much more so than week to week viewings with season breaks etc.

I was sad when I watched Wonderfalls and Firefly on DVD ... two shows I'd never even heard of until relased on that format. From someone who watches the local Fox affiliate every day reruns of Malcolm in the Middle, The Simpsons, and Seinfeld, I don't see how I could never have seen advertising for these shows.

I felt that way with Freaks & Geeks and Firefly. They were cut so short. I know Firefly would've become so much more. I got the same feeling when I finisihed Xena too (I watched it too quickly). Funny since it was a show I was sure I wouldn't be able to get into.

I love viewing on DVD for the first time I watch a series so much more than watching live on TV. Not only do I get to experience the episodes in high quality on my 9ft screen in the dark where I have no distractions when viewing (all I can see is the screen too, so that helps), but I also get much more involved and can watch them faster. I end up WAY more involved and sucked into the show's reality than I do sitting around watching on a tv with commercial breaks. Everytime there's a commercial break on TV I get sucked right back into reality, so watching on DVD is on the big screen is a far more engrossing experience for me.

The answer is that there wasn't advertising for those shows, at least not much.

As for being sad, it's a little downer to finish a show you liked on DVD, but not as much of a downer as when you're watching it as it airs on TV and it's cancelled. I watched both Firefly and Wonderdalls when they first aired. If you think watching the last episode of Wonderfalls on DVD is sad, imagine the dissapointment I had when what was potentially going to be a great new series for years to come gets cancelled after only 4 episodes. Or the dissapointment in knowing there are 3 more episodes of Firefly that you won't see. At least the DVDs for those shows offerred some closure, especially Wonderfalls.

I think DVD viewing is much less dissapointing, since you usually know a show is cancelled before reaching the end, so you're more prepared. With some, you know going in that the show is cancelled, so the end isn't unexpected. If the show managed a reasonable story arc, like Wonderfalls did, then it's almost more like watching a really long movie, or episodic miniseries, rather than a series cut down before it could even really start.

You need a Tivo (or DVR equivilent), and possibly HDTV.

I just got into LOST this year, after watching the first season on DVD. The DVD set was fun, getting all that information and drama in such a compressed timeline. However, there is something to be said about watching it "as it happens." With HDTV, LOST looks and sounds even better than the DVDs, and with a DVR, skipping by commercials is no problem. Plus, I get to participate in discussions of the show with many other people right after it airs, trying to guess what happens next and waiting in anticipation to find out. Sometimes the waiting is annoying though, especially with long breaks between new epsiodes. I do think there are advantages to both modes of viewing though.

I do. It's like, "Okay, you pulled me into your world and now I want more" but you can't have any more. Don't they know I NEED more?

Do you get sad when a movie you really like ends after 2 hours?

Every single time...And its especially hard on dvd because you have basically sensory overload because you OD on it, and then you are cut off. Kinda like going into drug rehab.

Sometimes when I watch them alone and there is no one else around, I cry.

I was sad when I finished watching the original UK edition of the office. 12 episodes and a 2 part Christmas special weren't enough for me, but it ended beautifully.

Well I just finished season 1 of Gilmore Girls and even though I have 4 more sets on DVD and the current season, there is very much a feeeling of maybe I should watch them slowly, so I can prolong my viewing experience. Of course, it is so hard when the next episode is just a click away. The same thing happened last year when I did the whole Buffy/Angel thing.

Not sure why this thread should apply just to tv series on dvd...

Several series I've been disappointed that they ended mainly because they weren't really given the fair shake they should have : Futurama,Karen Sisco, Odyssey 5, Firefly are some that spring to mind.

Farscape was the only time I've been truly sad as well as angry that it was over (MST3K being the other case)...I had just caught up with farscape from beginning through the halfway point of season 4 and started tivo'ing the rest of season 4 which had just started up when I found out the show had been cancelled and there would be no promised fifth season....the way the last episode wrapped up the storylines in a not-unsatisfactory manner only to be reminded in the last two minutes of what would never be....

...and then the year and a half wait after that to receive some form of closure.

Michael

Movies are only 2 hours, 4 or 5 seasons of a tv show can be well over 50 hours, that's a lot of time in their world. The characters who are in all or most of the series, that's a lot of time you spent with them.

The shows with short runs, like Sports Night, Wonderfalls, etc. I think Wonderfalls had a sticker that said something like "all 13 episodes, including 10 that never aired" and I thought to myself, FOx buries these shows on free tv and then make money on selling them.

But I think it would feel worse to watch a show and not feel it's worth watching till the end, or not feel it's good enough to watch again. I'm glad the ones I chose to buy have a high rewatchability value, especially the shorter ones that I can re-visit in a single weekend but never get bored enough to sell.

I've felt this way about *two* series:

* Firefly - It's tragic that this incredibly fresh and innovative show was never really given a chance in its initial run on network TV. The show "kicked-in" around its fourth episode; the last 8 episodes were all apparently "too good for television". This series left me breathless after having viewed it for the first time on DVD. The presentation (in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen) really helps to "open up" the show as well.

* Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Now, this show had a nice 7 season run in syndication. But you know what? Around the fourth season Ronald D. Moore (the man who has revitalized Battlestar Galactica) started getting heavily involved in the writing of the show; and this thing went into hyperdrive with incredible, linear story arcs and tremendous character development. The writers tried hard to wrap the series up in the last 10 episodes of Season 7; but they really needed another year to do the series proper justice. The show really shines on DVD: The linear story arcs and the incredibly deep character development both seem orders of magnitude more compelling than when the show was viewed on TV in syndication. When the final episode of Season 7 spun down on my DVD player, I felt a real sense of loss ... but mostly I was ready for an 8th season of what will probably end up being the last great Star Trek show that we'll see in our lifetimes!

We just finished up Freaks and Geeks (I had caught only one or 2 episodes before picking up the dvd), and I hated to see it end, it was just that good of a show... it is a shame what ends up being successful on tv compared to great shows that were never given time to find their niche...

Watching Firefly and then finishing it up with Serenity, pretty much killed me.

I just can't fathom why other networks decided not to pick up this kick-ass series.

I wouldn't call it sad, more like melencholy(sp?). Like after reading a good, long book or coming home from a vacation to visit friends or relatives. You get use to being with the people/characters and then you're jerked back into your other life and you miss them for a few days. Although I had seen them before I missed DS9 and B5 after watching them again on dvd 1 or 2 eps. per day. I remember really feeling after watching Lonesome Dove and The Beatles Anthology the first time they aired on the network.

Freaks and Geeks, Wonderfalls, Firefly, and Gamebreakers (this show got the ratings, and I highly recommend it to sports and non sports fans alike...was removed after 1 season due to the ESPN having their nuts in the NFL's mouth and the NFL threatening to bite em!)

freaks and Geeks actually made me cry however!

I had started Angel during the holidays and now I've seen and own up to Season Three. I'm already sad. I burned through Season 2 and 3 in a matter of days. And there's only two seasons left...GOD I love this show.

I also felt bad about Firefly but the movie helped with the pain.
