Why didn't Uncle Phil pick up Will from the airport?

This has been bugging me for well over 10 years now. Uncle Phil is supposed to be this rich guy who lives in Bel Air and has a huge house and successful career, but when his nephew flys over to live with him, he can't even go pick him up at the airport? Will had to take a cab that smelled weird. Uncle Phil could have sent his butler Jeffrey or even Hilary or Carlton to pick up Will, but he just sat on his fat ass?

LOL! You know I never thought of that before but that is a very valid idea. You'd think he'd even have a limo service pick him up instead of making him get a taxi.

It's sad, but even though I've never seen the show I knew exactly what you were talking about.

Actually, in the full version of the song (not the shortened version they play before most episodes) this is explained in the second verse:

Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop and yelled my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested
I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared

I whistled for a cab and when it came near...

Full lyrics here:

It would seem that Uncle Phil did send a limo, but Will avoided the driver thinking he was a member of the popo and got in a cab instead.

Where does Jazz come into play? Did Will meet him in Bel-Air or is he a friend from Philly? I never understood how the two met on the show.

Thank for the info. I am a little skeptical though. I have never heard this version and there are inaccuracies in the lyrics. I didn't know it was "If anything I can say this cab is rare". I thought he said "If anything I can say this cab smelled weird" because he held his nose and stuff.

I have an mp3 of the full version of the song. I can email it if you'd like or if someone would like to provide the webspace to share it I could email it to them as well.

The full song is available on the CD Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Greatest Hits. I have the CD and listen to it regularly.

From my recollection, the lyrics posted above are pretty accurate.

At the last "Fresh Prince of Bel Air Convention" I attended (San Diego, 2003) there was a healthy debate as to whether or not the extended theme song could be considered canon or not, considering it was never used in the actual show.

Kudos to the Fresh Prince for tackling a touchy political subject in a sitcom theme song!
