Wow, I thought of this song immediately when I read your thread title. Guess you have been watching football lately too, huh?

This is a great song that brings tears to my eyes yet they sell it to a credit card company and completely take away the dignity of the song. I know they like the money but it just seems wrong for this song to be used this way.

A Feist song...I think it was Mushaboom...used in a cologne commercial.

That was "Lovesick" in a Victoria Secret commercial. Funny thing is, Bob himself appeared in the commercial. I'll give it a pass.

What commercial was that used in? I remember Surifng On a Rocket was used by Nissan but I don't remember that one.

I too was bummed to hear one of the best songs from my favorite band used to sell Cadillacs. Later, when I heard that sales had increased by 50% after the ads began running it felt kinda cool to know that Zep still has what it takes. Zep was notorious for being very shrewd in their business dealings, always getting the long end of the stick, and even if those they dealt with didn't like the deal they didn't care that much because they still made a ton of cash. I have no doubt that Zep got millions for the rights to the song and probably a piece of each car sold on top of that, maybe even free Cadilacs for life.
So in a warped kind of way it feels good to know that a favorite band still has that kind of cultural influence.

It really doesn't bother me that much. I remember hearing the Ramones "No Go" on some ad back in '87 and actually thought it was kind of cool. Heard M.I.A. on a Honda Civic ad this morning and it didn't really leave me feeling angry/sad.

Heck, on a rare occasion it's a GOOD thing. One of my all time fave recordings is Trio's "Trio and Error" and it wasn't released on CD until "Da Da Da" became a "hit" on a VW commercial. I was thrilled some small bit of popularity made the record company release the album again.

That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that they would rather their music be used to sell a car rather than allow Cameron Crowe use Stairway to Heaven in the movie Almost Famous, a movie that celebrates what Rock and Roll used to be.

Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" was used for some fucking uber-commercial claptrap recently. I thought that was pretty sad.

That would depend on how much the studio offered them or how much they asked for and were turned down. The Cadillac decision was most likely based purely on financial gain. Even if the Cadillac thing had never happened Stairway would not have been used in the film probably because the price was too high. True to form Zep would have wanted at least a million $ a piece or 10% of the film profits, etc. that's the way they operate. If they refused the use of Stairway at any price or at a deal close to what Cadillac gave them, then yeah, they would rather have their music in a car commercial than a film about music. Cadillac has a lot more money to spend on advertising than a movie studio has for a single film budget.
