Anyone like Lindsey Buckingham's "Out of the Cradle"?

Buckingham is the guy from Fleetwood Mac. Some time ago I bought "Out of the Cradle". It is a wonderful album of quirky but extremely tuneful pop (reminds me a little of Talking Heads's "Once in a Lifetime" in style); my fave tracks are "Don't Look Down", "You Do Or You Don't", "Turn it On", and "Countdown".
Thereafter, I decided to check out his two other albums, "Go Insane" (good) and "Law and Order" (not good), but neither one came close to living up to the standards of the later album.

Does anyone know of a musician or album that is similar to "Out of the Cradle"?

I love Buckingham and "Out of the Cradle". But I strongly disagree that "Law and Order" is not good... in fact, it's pretty damn great. K_Tm_S is right about the "Tusk" material. I've made my own disc of just his songs from that CD because they are so weird and wonderful. Of all the dinosaur bands from the 70's I think FM retained much of their charm due to the creativeness of Buckingahm.

Um, haven't tought much about similar artists, however. Badly Drawn Boy? AMG lists Mull Historical Society. Not a bad start.

i've always wanted to give out of the cradle a try, but the dated 80's production is a big drawback for me... if i could listen to full songs somewhere before purchasing, maybe that'd give me a better idea than just sound samples.

in any case, buckingham was an awesome guitar player/arranger/producer when in mac. even the songs he didn't pen still sound great with his contributions.

ditto for the tusk mixtape. i have a playlist in itunes just for the buckingham songs

Lindsay Buckingham is a genius and a virtuoso. I like his solo stuff better than the Fleetwood Mac stuff. Particularly Go Insane, which is an interesting foray into New Wave for the old school rocker.

Thanks for the recommendations so far, everyone. I'll do some research.

Many people probably agree with you, but, after hearing "...Cradle" and expecting more of the same, I was sorely disappointed that it was somehow a completely different sound; not nearly as melodious and catchy. "Go Insane" contains a few good songs though.

I probably don't have the ear to professionally distinguish dated from modern-sounding. Perhaps it's a little tinny in places, but generally I'd say the recording is very robust and, notably, clean and crisp (love the unusual vocal inflections on "Turn it On"). I wish he'd release a new album of comparable quality.

By the way, another "studio wizard" musician I mentioned here some time ago is Richard X. Heyman. He's a one-man operation (well, two if you count his wife), recording and mixing all instruments and vocals himself. His albums, with the exception of his latest, "Basic Glee", and its leftovers album "Rightovers", are uniformly great.

I love Lindsey's work! I think his solo albums only got better as he went along. Not to say "Law & Order" wasn't a good album, but it has the fewest songs I like. Sadly, I'm not sure where his solo career lies these days. He had an album basically ready, "Gift of Screws", but unless what I heard was false, the records company was sceptical of releasing a "Lindsey Buckingham" album. A little before that, he was saying that he knew if he released it as "Fleetwood Mac" with the group, it'd sell much more than under his name. So with all the circumstances as they were, what we got was "Say You Will", as a lot of his songs on there were from the non-existant "Gift of Screws".

It'd be nice to get a Lindsey Buckingham Anthology for demos, live, rare tracks (like the two "Vacation" songs!) and other movie soundtrack stuff (the only one coming to mind is "Time Bomb Town".. are there more?).

Thanks for the info, reverie. I'll look into that F.M. album. And I agree with you about an anthology including soundtrack material. "Holiday Road" is one of the best-ever movie songs.

"Holiday Road" is a wonderful, bouncy song. "Say You Will" is an over-stuffed album, but most of the Lindsey songs are great.. there are are a few mediocre ones. I think I'm less fond of Stevie's stuff anymore, nothing she's done in a decade has thrilled me. There's maybe two of her songs on there I like. And that's bascially it.. it was really just a two songwriter show.

I know he also has a recent-ish DVD out, but I haven't really looked much into it yet. I have a copy on VHS of some show he did (on VH-1 maybe?) where he said his idea for the band was bascially just this line-up of guitar players. There are others too, a drummer, bass player.. but there were like five guitarists or some high amount.
