Ryan Adams: 29 - 12/20/05 (3rd release of 2005!)

Ryan Adams preps third CD of 2005 By Jonathan Cohen
1 hour, 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Singer/songwriter Ryan Adams is following through on his pledge to release three albums this year.

On the heels of May's "Cold Roses" and September's "Jacksonville City Nights," the series will conclude with "29," due December 20 via Lost Highway.

While the first two projects were credited to Adams and his new band, the Cardinals, "29" is billed as a solo album. The set features contributions from the Cardinals' J.P. Bowersock as well as bassist Jennifer Condos, who previously played on Adams' "Gold."

The ambitious 2005 release slate has generated significant sales for the artist. "Cold Roses" has moved more than 123,000 units, while "Jacksonville City Nights" has shifted more than 57,000. Adams' best-selling release to date is 2001's "Gold," which has moved nearly 350,000 copies.

Adams will play a two-night stand beginning tomorrow Wednesday (November 16) with Willie Nelson at New York's Beacon Theater. He will headline his own gig Friday at the city's new Tribeca Performing Arts Center as part of the Wall Street Rising concert series.

I liked Jacksonville City Nights and I loved Cold Roses. Let's see if the prolific Adams can make it a trifecta.

I'm still trying to take in 'cold roses' and 'jacksonville city lights.' hahahah, but nonetheless, I am still looking forward to this disc.

This is another excellent CD by Adams (It's been leaked). I love pretty much all his stuff though so I may not have the most objective pov.

I love all his stuff too, but this is an extremely difficult and slow listen as far as I'm concerned. Bring back the Cardinals or some nice melodies or something.

Who knows though, it may grow on me. Jacksonsville City Nights sure did.

The song "Strawberry Wine" besides being a cliche of a title, is painful to listen to, that is if you can make it through all 8 minutes of the track.

"Carolina Rain" and "The Sadness" at least spice up the album with some upbeat tempos and creativeness.

6.8 in pitchfork = Yeah it is bad but we gave the album to someone who might like it (Amanda Petrusich). At least Pitchfork's newest comments of 2005 is good with bands and muscians picking their best albums.

I'm liking it so far. It's mellow yeah, but isn't as grating as Jacksonville. 29 is a pretty decent title track, I like Strawberry Wine and I absolutely LOVE The Sadness

to The Sadness. My favorite track on the album as well.

I like this album much better than Jacksonville Nights but I'd say that Cold Roses is still the best of the three.

Thankfully, not quite as country as this year's other two releases. Reminds me more of Love Is Hell, overall.

While Jacksonville was pretty country, I don't think Cold Roses was country at all. Roses was pretty much a laid back rocker that was a whole lot of fun.

Cold Roses was mostly great, with a few stinkers. Jacksonville City Night had some good songs with several stinkers.

At this point..... I'm starting to lose interest. And that's saying a lot because I love Ryan Adams.

You said it.

After listening to it about ten times (and struggling each time), I've come to realize that about half of Cold Roses is great, the other half is really bad filler (IMO of course). JCN has even higher percentage of crap. However, put the good parts of both albums together and you've have one hell of an album, clearly one of the best of 05. This guy needs an editor, IMO.

Having said that, I'll probably get 29 any way.

I'd rate his 2005 albums like this:

Cold Roses - 9/10
Jacksonville - 7/10
29 -- 4/10
