3 cd's so far with pretty much all of the same material (one studio, one acoustic, one live). They have come to Tampa 3 or 4 times on this cd alone. I know it's smart to strike while they are hot, considering they will probably be a one-hit wonder, but when is enough enough?

They've actually had three hits off the album, but I think so much attention has been paid to one album that, historically speaking, their next album will suffer by comparison.

Yeah, I completely agree. And it's not like this album is really a "mega-hit", at least I don't consider it one. Anyone have any idea how many copies it has sold?

The Killers could get close with Hot Fuss, then the limted edition version of it with three songs.

This is happening more and more with "hot new bands" these days. Say a band (Killers, Maroon 5, Interpol, etc.) sells 100,000 albums and generates good buzz. Now, chances are, they were meant to sell 100,000 albums. Pretty good for a new band, right? Indie kids proclaim them the best new band ever. Now, why wait for the dreaded "sophmore jinx" album? Repackage the CD with a new track and release it again. The band now has "buzz" so Best Buy/Circuit City throws this "new" release in their ad. People who didn't pick it up the first time around, and have heard the "buzz", see the ad and go pick it up for $9.99. The aformentioned indie kids buy it again because they have to own that b-side. All of sudden, "hot new band" sells another 50,000 copies.

Good news for the band but who loses? The poor kid who bought the album the first time it was released for $17.99 from the local shop that carried it when Best Buy wouldn't. He pays more and doesn't get the "special edition".

Lol, I didn't even know about the Live cd/dvd until a week before it came out.I REALLY like the dvd from what I've watched, I had seen them opening for Matchbox Twenty right before they became really big. Yeah, they are really milking the success....but they've been good releases. THey have a lot to live up to w/ the next cd, hopefully they dont dissapoint.

I don't blame the band for LE release. It is more likely to be the record company.

I agree, especially since that album is 3 (and very close to going on 4) years old now.

Many don't know this, but the album was actually re-released with slightly different artwork (back cover) a year after it came out. It was originally on Octone records (a subdivison on BMG) in 2002, and then got picked up by J Records (also, a subdivsion of BMG) - and along with the artwork, they also change the issue date to reflect it, to 2003.

Didn't Color Me Badd release 95% of the songs on their debut? They milked that for 3 years. What about Bell Biv Devoe? They were still performing Poison at awards shows 3 years after its release. Both of which fell into obscurity upon the release of their sophomore albums.

Shakira did this with her first major spanish album called Pies Descalzos in late 1995. It was 12 songs and she released 6 or 7 songs from it and they never stopped playing them until her second album came out in late 1998. She released 8 or 9 songs out of the 12 in this album as well.

No, but Matador needs it with such non-hit albums as the National, Dead Meadow, the Double, Early Man, Laura Cantrell, etc, doesn't sell 5,000 copies, they need to milk some of their hot properties. Granted, they still have Malkimus, New Pornographers, Belle and Sebastian, but those babies don't go gold unlike some bands that make a career sounding like Joy Division with Television guitar riffs.

I think I remember that "Cracked Rearview Mirror" back in the day sort of had the same treatment with record store exclusives or more so major chain exclusives but then again it also Hootie had better songs.

Thought I'd bump this after seeing Maroon 5 won the Grammy for 'Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal'. Granted, the Grammy's are a joke, but come on. Aren't they supposed to be for material released in the previous year? Songs About Jane was released June 25, 2002 for Christ's sake.

In looking at this thread, I'm surprised more people aren't critical of Maroon 5. It's one thing to release an album and then re-release a special edition. It's quite another to release an album, milk it for all it's worth, then release a live acoustic album containing 5 songs from the album & 2 covers, then release another live album, this one containing all 12 songs off the first album, 1 cover and 1 new song. I mean, they've released 3 albums off of 13 songs, it's pretty pathetic. I wouldn't be surprised to see them release a 5 song 'Greatest Hits' album before coming up with new material.
