First Curtis Hanson now Jim Sheridan?

Can someone please explain to me why these critically-acclaimed directors are helming rapper publicity projects? I saw the trailer for Get Rich or Die Tryin and yeah it looked like absolute crap like I expected to be, but then I saw Jim Sheridan's name attached. WTF? I kinda expected to see this from some music video turned movie director but not Jim Sheridan.

Maybe he did it as a favor so they would let him direct his Ikiru remake.

I know nothing about the movie Get Rich or Die Trying but it worked well in 8 Mile, at least in my opinion. Good movie with even a decent performance from Eminem.

I just saw this while looking at Sheridan's imdb list. My jaw immediately hit the floor. I've got to find an interview with him that says why he's doing this. It just doesn't make sense. He's done great movies like :My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father, In America, & The Boxer. Not in my wildest dreams would I have believed he'd would do a gangster rap movie starring 50 Cent.

Sheridan likes to eat too.

Also, a studio hit will allow him to get his own projects off the ground.

He only did those movies so he could get this one.

Well, his bio states that he 'makes a living' by doing several coporate commercials. And I seriously doubt this was the only thing to come along. There are most likely thousands of other flims, which the haters wouldn't blast, that he could have choosen if he just needed the paycheck.

None of you have seen the film, yet you are all hating on it. I think it looks like a good flick, and 50 Cent seems capable of carrying it. Also, the screenwriter has written several Sopranos episodes, which means this probably has a quality script. People need to look above the fact that the marketing campaign is being built around the star, and realize this is going to be a damn good movie in all likelyhood. I'll be seeing this next wednesday when it opens.

p.s. I am a 50 Cent fan, take this how you will.

What makes him "seem capable of carrying it"?

I'll take it as anyone who isn't a 50 Cent fan isn't gonna see this. Nor thinks it looks like a good film.

One problem alone is the mentality of the title of this movie (and 50 Cents album of the same name):

Get Rich Or Die Tryin'

That's a messed-up way of thinking already, and it hasn't even gotten past the opening credits at that point.

Ebert and Roeper gave it 2 thumbs up...of course I realize this means nothing as they have been known to praise some pretty shitty flicks, but still a good sign!...sorry Popcorntree

Yeah, they praised 50 Cents' acting... and then immediately showed a scene in which his line reading was awful. In fact, in every scene they showed, 50 Cents' acting was pretty weak.

I think they're kinder to films they are given permission to "review early."
