Michael Jackson sells 8,000 albums w/ "new" release

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005340731,00.html

MICHAEL Jackson’s new album sold just 8,000 copies in its first week in the US.

The greatest hits CD charted at a lowly 128 as fans snubbed the star.

The flop is a huge blow for Jacko, 46, who hoped to make a comeback after he was cleared of child sex abuse charges last month.

The Essential Michael Jackson was even beaten by 1970s star Carly Simon’s new CD Moonlight which sold 58,000 copies.

A spokeswoman for Neilsen Soundscan, which monitors US record sales, confirmed: “Carly Simon sold 50,000 more albums than Michael Jackson.”

The figures are a far cry from Jacko’s heyday when he sold 40MILLION copies of Thriller worldwide.

The singer has scarcely been seen since he was acquitted of abusing teenager Gavin Arvizo.

He was taken to hospital with dehydration after the trial and then fled America for a holiday in Bahrain.
I'll admit that I don't really have a handle on what good sales are in the pedophile genre, but this does seem bad.

I can hardly believe that number. Wow.

That was a pretty good hits compilation as well. Much better than HIStory.

The thing is: he just had the 4-disc box set come out late last year that many retailers like Best Buy had on sale for only $20 near Christmas.

I realize that but how many people want a 4-disc Jacko box set? I thought this collection was more for the masses. Either way, I'm surprised completists didn't drive that number higher.

Guess he should have added a new song or two.

That's 7,999 more than I thought would have purchased it.

Those numbers are pretty bad.

I bought the MJ box set for $10.75 from BMG (I used free CD vouchers and only had to pay shipping). I saw no reason to rebuy pretty much the same material.

After buying History, Number Ones and the Ultimate Collection over the years, there's really no reason to buy the Essentials.

I think the main reasons are a) he has too many greatest hits CDs out already and b) there wasn't a lot of advertising for it (at least not that I noticed).

agreed...i saw nothing about this coming out...plus I don't hear as much Jackson in record stores, malls, elevators, department stores, or in the movies....if he wants to sell some records he needs to schill a song in a car commercial or something

With all these greatest hits collections that Michael Jackson is coming out with it appears his recording career is over. Oh well, atleast he has the child molesting to fall back on.

I have all but one of the songs on that new set (since he hasn't put out much new in years)....no reason to rebuy the same material.

I have seen many of these 'Essential' collections, but heard nothing about this release, and haven't found it anywhere either...

Looking forward to a 'new' release, tons of stuff is still in the vaults...

I agree. I hadn't even heard of it until this thread. Granted, I'm not much of a fan, but I usually hear about bigger name artist releases.

How many times do they expect people to buy more or less the same thing? There should be a contest between MJ hit collections and Evil Dead DVD releases.

Mike has a new album out?!?!?!?!?!

If he teams up with a good producer again and stops trying to self produce his half finished songs, he could probably sell again. But ANOTHER greatest hits collection? Even I won't pick that up. (And I have every CD he's done since leaving Motown.)

(Motown stuff is on vinyl.)
