Overall ticket sales for Star Wars question

Now that i think it hits the dollars cinema nation wide in the next couple of weeks does the ticket sales from the dollar cinema still count for overall movie sales. I ask because it is number 8 all time but trailing ever so slightly to the #7 slot (return of the king) and i would love to see it get that position. i think last i saw (last weekend it was 1.5 million away).

thanks in advance

It will. ROTS is currently sitting at 376.2 million dollars. ROTK is sitting just barely over 377 million. Right now ROTS is making about 155,000 dollars per day according to boxofficemojo.com. By Thursday it should be at 376.5 million. Over the last 5-6 weeks it has been dropping somewhere between 30-35%. Last weekend it made 1 million dollars. So going by those numbers, it should make somewhere in the 650,000 range this weekend, send it past ROTK. Even in a worst case scenario, the film drops severely, and pulls in only 400,000, it will be just 120,000 bucks shy of ROTK.

However, that's about as far as it goes because the 6th place film, Spider-Man, is at 403 million. Star Wars will have to settle for having 3 films in the all-time top 10.

Welcome to the forum Aggieboy93.

Remember that search is your friend. There are already at least two threads regarding ROTS's box office tally in this subforum. For the record dollar theatre receipts are indeed included in a movie's final numbers. If you check the Monday actuals at boxofficemojo.com you'll notice that there are several movies listed that are now playing at dollar cinemas exclusively (I noticed Robots and Monster-In-Law for example).

In fact the movie you are so desperate for ROTS to pass (the much better ROTK - not to be confused with ROTJ) saw a huge bump when it began it's long life as a dollar movie.

Let's hope that ROTK is never re-released in theatres a la SW, ESB and ROTJ (and ET for that matter) or else ROTS reign at No. 6 will be very short lived.

Not really, since we're assured of at least one more ROTS release towards the end of the decade, when Lucas does them all in 3-D.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Both did big business and are in the top 10. You can get too caught up in that, because in the future, ticket prices will be so much higher, that things will get replaced all the time. Records are made to be broken.

I lost all interest in this "top-10" mania the day they started adding the Star Wars: SE $$$ to the tally for the original release of the movie.

1. I could make a pretty strong argument that they aren't the same film.
2. 1977 dollars do NOT equal 1997 dollars. To add those together is nuts.

I'll occasionally take a peek at lists that are adjusted for inflation, which is the only fair way to do these things.

ROTS just passed ROTK this weekend. It now stands at 377.1 million. Looks like the film will settle in around 379 million.
