Both Costner fillms, but I think both "For Love of the Game" and "Tin Cup" are better than most think.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I have Eight Men Out sitting on my shelf unopened, as I got it almost for free a while ago. I've been meaning to get to it eventually. Sounds pretty good.

Eight Men Out was okay, but did Field of Dreams really need a prequel?

No, it was liked by critics but if you ask people to name the best baseball movies ever, Eight Men Out usually doesn't come up. But Field of Dreams does.

Eight Men Out was fine entertainment, but I don't like the way that it made Shoeless Joe Jackson into a totally sympathetic figure.

then I'm guessing you didn't like Field of Dreams, either.

and I agree with tommy. "for love of the game" was a surprisingly good movie.

Oh, you mean Eight Men Out is underappreciated and neglected compared to a hugely popular feel-good movie starring a ‘major’ Hollywood actor.

Pride Of the Yankees (1942) is another great baseball movie.

most overrated baseball movie: Bull Durham

dont jump on me, the first 80% of the film is very good, bu the last 15-20 minutes are SO awful I can barely watch it. kevin costner and susan sarandon walking around, feeling sad, set to a horrible 80s sax solo.

I like Eight Men Out more than Field of Dreams also. My favorite baseball movie is 61* though.

Most Underrated Baseball Movie - Eight Men Out
Most Overrated Baseball Movie - Field of Dreams

I liked em both. But Eight Men Out is a favorite of mine, that many of my friends have never seen.

Most Underrated Basketball Movie - He Got Game
Most Overrated Basketball Movie - Hoosiers

Yeah, i always wondered what the big deal about Hoosiers was. But i liked He Got Game.

Most Underrated Football Movie - All the Right Moves, Wildcats
Most Overrated Football Movie - Remember the Titans, North Dallas Forty

Does Jerry Maguire count?

Most Underrated Golf Movie - The Legend of Bagger Vance
Most Overrated Golf Movie - Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore is not overrated, imo. It's a great comedy

Tin Cup is a great golf movie. I haven't seen For The Love of the Game, but now i'm a bit more interested in seeing it.

It's certainly my favorite baseball movie ever, but I like most of Sayles' films.

Eight Men Out is not underrated by the critics but I think it has never been seen much or appreciated by the general public. It was my favorite John Sayles movie until Lone Star came along. Another little seen great baseball move is Bang the Drum Slowly.

Field of Dreams I agree with you 100%. I absolutely hate it.

Only beef I have with 8MEN OUT is the casting of the guy who played Joe Jackson.
They had a guy in the movie who looks like Joe Jackson playing a reporter.
The guy who was on t.v.'s TAXI.

I think you picked the only two hockey films people have heard of.

Aside from that, wasn't "Action" about moviemaking?

Hoosiers is good for the same reason Rudy is good.

they both present a story that is either very well known (especially if you're from indiana, like me) or rather transparent. you know what's coming, it's all a matter of getting there. after all, they're both true stories (mostly).

so in a way, rudy and hoosiers are like porn movies. we KNOW what's going to happen in the end - the money shot. rudy will get into the game, and hickory will beat goliath.

so why are these movies good? because as based on the money shot as they are, the buildup is just as enjoyable as the climax. you feel for the characters. and it balances out the movie. it relieves you of the urge to 'get to the end.' it makes the money shot less important, because the movie is just as much about sports as it is not about sports.

this is rambly, but i hope it makes sense. it's good because it's a sports movie that's not about sports.
