Taking my 12 year old to the movies...
The local $2 cheap theater has 3 flicks. Robots, The Pacifier, and Sin City. He has already seen Robots and did not like it too much. The Pacifier looks like a horrible nanny mr. mom type movie.
I was reading reviews of Sin City trying to figure out if it is too scary for a 12 year old boy. There seem to be strong opinions. Some say it is a GUY movie, that chicks can't understand it, and the violence is comic book. Others say this movie should be NC-17 film.
Is this a good movie for an uncle to take his nephew to? I know he likes Batman and dark comic book type movies.

The mods will be moving this pretty soon.
I haven't seen Sin City, but from what I've heard and read, it probably is NOT appropriate for a 12 year old. Batman Begins on the other hand is a good movie and appropriate.

Depending on how conservative your brother/sister is, taking the boy to Sin City could put you on the outs with them. Your nephew however, will think you're the really cool uncle.

MPAA: Rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue.
Sustained is a pretty key word in my opinion. It is like being bombarded with strong stylized violence.
Did your son see Kill Bill Vol. 1 or 2?

I would not have any problem watching Kill Bill with him, maybe I will rent that instead and the whole family can watch it together. I don't think she will say anything, because I will be the one bringing it over, but I don't think she will sit through the whole thing with us.

My criteria, for what is acceptable violence, is that it is not so realistic and disturbing that it is hard to sleep later. Like Natural Born Killers, that was just plain sickening.

- I'm a chick and I liked it very much. You don't have to be a guy to like a guy movie any more than you have to be a chick to enjoy a chick flick.
- The violence is stylized, extreme, and unrelenting.
- I'd say its rating is very debatable.
I'm not a parent and it's been awhile since I've been 12 myself, but my gut reaction is that it's a bit much for that age. I'd defer to the opinions of those who have kids, however.

i think 12 is a bit too young. i didnt know much about Sin City going in, and I was shocked a few times by the graphic violence and torture, and i'm 24.
tell him to wait until maybe 15.

And BOOBIES! BOOBIES BOOBIES BOOBIIIIEEEESSSS! Rip off a guy's 'goods'? No problem. Show a boob, I wouldn't recommend letting him watch it till he's 17.
...
I'm all for the 'self esteem' angle. However, Sin City is most-likely NOT the violent R-rated movie to show him. It has entirely too many acts criminal glorification. That's not how I see the movie. But I can imagine a kid seeing it, and equivalating it with something like the Grand Theft Auto games.
I'd ONLY take him if he's big on movies in general ... if he'd appreciate the substance and style over the violence. Is he some kind of prodical film geek? I was like that when I was twelve - but then I'm a NERD - turning into an antisocial coffee drinking *** (not my actual orientation, just slandering myself here folks), if you will. OH GOD! SAVE HIM NOW! Anyways, if he leaves talking about 'how cool when those hookers' heads were on the wall', maybe you did something wrong.
Batman kept it violent (harsh above gore), yet sofisticated and sincere. Rent Die Hard 3 for him. It's a fun, kick-ass, cocky bad-mouthed movie (which it sounds like you're looking for), where the good guys are good guys! If you want to get a little more riskay, check out Starship Troopers. Or Speed, or something.
If you think he's up for it, go see Land of the Dead. I'd show that to a 12 year old. Unless he's the kind of kid that cries when he has nightmares.
There's plenty of manly movies out there that aren't so grimm. Just none in the theaters right now. And, actually, good hard R movies are pretty rare these days. Maybe you should be checking the video store. Sin City is probably a bit much.

Regardless of whether or not the movie is appropriate for a 12 year old (it isn't), it's inappropriate for you to go behind the mother's back and take her son to a movie she doesn't want him to see.

I would NOT take a 12-year-old to SIN CITY. It's the most violent (although granted violent in a cartoonish way - like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill) movie I've seen in 2005.

Search for Sin City in the title pulls up these, upon which the topic at hand is thread #2 found.
Not bad for 10 seconds of work.

Man, when I was 12 I would have loved to have seen this movie. Actually, I probably would have seen it, as my parents never prevented me from seeing R-rated stuff. But that's just me...
