Star Trek Generations Video Transfer

Wow! Just watched this dvd last night (the 2 disc special collector's edition)... and the quality of the video transfer blew me away! This has to be one of the very best -- if not the best -- picture quality I have seen on a dvd. Even the Superbit titles I have in my collection aren't as visually stunning as this disc! The picture was so sharp and vibrant that some of the scenes almost had a 3-D effect to them. Anyone else notice how good this transfer is? [ In case it matters, my tv is a 56" widescreen Samsung DLP and my Sony dvd player is set on progressive scan, of course. ]

Ummm....you sir, must truely be smoking something, or drinking way too many of these

Quite frankly, I had to check the date of this thread/post to make sure that this wasn't an out-dated thread.

It is common knowledge around the entire Internet that the transfer of ST:G is well below sub par. Did you not notice the huge problem with compression artifacts? That "sharpness" you describe is bad compression.

Check out this review and scroll down to the Video part of it to see what I'm talking about.

Yeah, it's a pretty mediocre transfer. Soft details and a lot of shimmer.

Me too, that's why I had to check the date on the first post to make sure. Either that, or this thread is a joke.

Although it does seem humorous that, of all the Star Trek films, the OP would choose perhaps the most reviled transfer to praise, I also think it looks fine...on my small TV.

i never thought Generations looked great, whether it was in the theater, or on VHS and finally DVD. it was always grainy and way too dark. the sound has also seemed bad to me, the dialogue in particular, which has an awfully hollow-sound to it.

perhaps these are intrinsic issues with the film that cannot be eliminated with any filtering techniques currently employed.

My thoughts exactly. Because the transfers for both First Contact and Insurrection are absolutely stellar.

Not only are there compression problems, but there's still a lot of dirt and grain on the print...it's like Paramount anamorphically enhanced the same transfer that the non-anamorphic earlier version was without any effort to clean up the print.

I didn't think the First Contact Collector's Edition quality was all that great, either - although it's certainly much better than Generations. But there was still a hint of grain and a fleck of dirt here and there on the First Contact print.

Insurrection looked pretty good, though.

Get a digital video essentials disc (cheap at Amazon.com) or an Avia setup disc. Does wonders for new home theatre owners. Then you will really see some performance from your TV. The contrast may be way too high.
