I will be adding one of these two to my collection tomorrow. Which of the two films do you feel is better?

I prefer the Sting more, but since there is no widescreen disc, it's hard to say. This is purely subjective of course. Why not rent them first to see which one you like more?

I love both films.

Just an argument myself and a couple of friends were having.

For the record I think Chinatown is the better film. But I prefer to watch the Sting.

I have yet to see The Sting because Universal is run by dickheads.

ya i would get the sting.....but the thing is no WS but it is an awesome flick to watch over and over.

So this is just a hypothetical question and you aren't really planning on buying one of them tomorrow?

If you prefer to watch The Sting, then isn't the decision obvious? Both films are great in their own rights so it's a personal choice.

I would imagine most people would say Chinatown. Though I like The Sting better.

My preference is for Chinatown, but both are great.

Wow that is tough. It comes down to whether you prefer heist movies or Noir, I prefer heist movies so I lean toward The Sting, but don't get the Sting because the DVD sucks. I Tivoed it off TCM so I can always watch the widescreen release.

Both are two of the best movies that the 70s produced, but I gotta go with Chinatown.

Both are great but I would have to say that Chinatown is a better film. Maybe I see it that way because it's much more on the serious side so it seems more important or weighty or something.

I have yet to see The Sting in its entirety (I know - it's hard to believe), but I would have to go w/ a Newman/Redford heist flick over what I consider one of the most over-rated movies of all-time (its right up there w/ Taxi Driver).

Chinatown's the better film, but I'd rather own The Sting (if the DVD didn't suck) and would watch it more.

I live in CHINATOWN. I just visit THE STING.

The Sting is great, but each time I watch it, I see the same thing. Each time I watch Chinatown, I find something new.

Get Chinatown, it's the better film and the DVD is decent enough. I personally wouldn't want to own a pan & scan version of a good movie like The Sting.

'The Sting' for pure entertainment, good twist ending. 'Chinatown' more of a cult movie than entertaining one...............at least for me.

I personally think The Sting is more accessible and enjoyable (and has a fantastic ragtime music score), but Chinatown is a great movie too, one you'll want to revisit, though not as often as the Sting, simply because the Sting is more "fun" to watch.

Different movies for different moods, i say. The Sting is more of a fun buddy movie. Stylish but not as artsy, more humorous. Newman has one funny poker scene. But Chinatown's the more serious, artsy movie. And there's John Huston's acting which doesn't get enough praise, imo.
