"Luke, I am your father!" has been quoted for over two decades but the actual line is "No, I am your father."

Well, it's not from a movie...but no one ever said "Beam Me Up Scotty" during the first three seasons of "Star Trek: The Original Series".

funny that this thread would pop up...i was talking about this with a few people and those are the exact two movies i was telling them about

James Cagney's character from WHITE HEAT is often quoted as saying, "Top of the world, Ma!"

Whereas I think the actual line is: "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!"

Also, I don't think Cagney ever said "You dirty rat" in a movie, although he was often quoted as having done so.

That WC Fields and Mae West line "Come up and see me some time". I can't remebmer but I thought I heard it's commonly misquoted or attributed to the wrong speaker.

The "badges" line from The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is often misquoted.

Should be: "Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any steenkin' badges!".

It's a misquote of one of West's lines from She Done Him Wrong, spoken to Cary Grant as Capt. Cummings (wink, wink).

I'm pretty sure Cary Grant never said, "Judy! Judy! Judy!" in any movie. Some impressionist used to do an impression of Grant and chose that phrase because it emphasized his accent and unique delivery.

But the original line was from Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The line was copied and changed slightly in Blazing Saddles. The line was also parodied in UHF, as someone mentioned already.

On The Andy Grifith Show, Goober I believe does Grant to "Anj" in front of Gomer.

Gomer: "do it Goober...do Cary Grant..."
Goober: "judyjudyjudy!" no accent, no pause in between.

Here's a reverse, I always thought the line that people use to imitate Katherine Hepburn, "The Calla Lillies are in bloom again", never existed in a film, but I was wrong, it is from Stage Door

I had no idea the AFI was going to do a Famous Quotes show. Looks like they are using the correct quotes as opposed to the "popular" version. (Play it Sam..play as Time Goes Goes By") I wonder if that will affect their rank.

The last line by Rhett in Gone With the Wind is often misquoted. I think it is "Frankly, my Dear, I don't give a damn!" but it has been a long time since I watched it so I may not have that right. It is sometimes quoted as "Frankly, Scarlet, I don't give a damn!" and various iterations like that.

My understanding is that the use of "damn" in a movie was fairly scandalous for the time. Seems pretty quaint today.
