Most recognized movie score...

Been thinking about this and wondered, what would be the most recognized movie theme. I hate to say song. It's more of a scored theme that if someone heard it, they would instantly you will say, it's such and such a movie. Even if they've never seen the movie, they could easily recognize it just by hearing a few bars from the score.

I would have included Titanic if there weren't lyrics to it. I should have added Superman.

Star Wars first. Then probably Lord of the Rings.

I'd bet money on Star Wars. That is if you're talking recognized by pretty much anyone in the civilized world.

I'd have to say the Jaws theme.

Star Wars

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly also had a very memorable score, but it's not as universally recognized.

I was thinking that as a close second. The thing with this one is that while everyone knows it's that ominous music and "somethings coming", they might not know that it's from Jaws.

With Star Wars being so contemporary there's no mistaking it.

I can't remember a score from LotR.

Ones that stand out to me:

Star Wars
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jaws
Batman
Godfather
Superman
E.T.

I think Raiders would be more recognizable than Star War due to the trumpet solo. But JAWS could be distinguished by even fewer bars.

The Entertainer is pretty recognizable piece, however, it is an older film that may not carry over with the popularity of a Star Wars.

By The Sting, do you mean The Entertainer? Was that composed specifically for the Sting, or was it merely 'used' in The Sting? If it was a song before that, regardless of if The Sting made it a hit, I would consider it apples-and-oranges to dedicated 'movie scores.'

Star Wars, followed by the Shark theme from Jaws. But that's a good point, would that be 'scary theme' or "Jaws theme" Next, and off the poll, I'd say Back to the Future. Raiders certainly up there as well, and Superman.

Does the five note thing from Close Encounters count as a theme?

Well, the main theme was fairly memorable, and definitely used ad nauseum during all three movies. Maybe more memorable to me than others.

It was composed decades before the film was even thought of...

Others I recognize right off are Jurassic Park and the Monty Norman James Bond Theme.

From what I read it seemed like Hamlisch used Joplin's Entertainer yet may have tweaked it here and there to fit within the movie.
