Leia's relationship with Obi-Wan?
In Episode 3, Yoda and Obi-Wan part ways, and Obi-Wan delivers Luke to Tatooine, where he buys some land and settles down in exile, and to watch over Luke. And he apparently changes his name to Ben and downplays his role as a Jedi Knight to keep the locals from bothering him. So how is it that Leia, who was raised on Alderaan, worlds away, knows who Obi-Wan is and why did Ben come out of exile to let his name be known on Alderaan? Exactly why is he Leia's last hope? And apparently, he does have contact with her even after he was on Tatooine, so his comment about Luke being the last hope and forgetting about Leia in Empire even makes less sense now.
Of course, I know the true answer: Lucas was pulling this stuff out of his ass as he went along. However, I don't read the EU books and was wondering if this was somehow covered in any of those or if there are any sound suggestions floating around out there.

she heard of rumors and legends of Obi still being alive and whatnot... she needed his help and sent out a distress call. Perhaps the droids didn't get a complete memory wipe and they told her stories as she grew up. I don't know really... I think it's a good question though.

-Bail Organa, Leia's "father," knew general kenobi and told her stories about him.

During the Clone Wars, Organa befriended General Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the revered Jedi Knight served him well in that terrible conflict. When Kenobi's apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, succumbed to the dark side, Organa hid one of Skywalker's twin offspring in the high court of Alderaan. Bail and his wife had been looking to adopt a child, and he came to raise and love young Leia Organa as his own child...
Bail sent Leia on a mission to locate Obi-Wan Kenobi and recruit him into the Alliance to help face the Death Star challenge. Leia failed, and her mission was eventually picked up by Luke Skywalker. Bail Organa was killed when the Death Star destroyed Alderaan.

"Years ago, you served my father during the Clone Wars, now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed."
Leia knew of Obi Wan because her father sent her to find him.

Exactly. I thought the message she recorded was quite clear. Bail sent her on a mission to get the Death Star plans, grab Obi-Wan, and meet back up on Alderaan.
Vader attacked the ship, so she was forced to hide the plans in R2 and send him to get Obi-Wan so he could deliver the plans to Bail.
She hasn't heard "rumors and legends" or anything. Her adoptive father knows who he is and where he is and sent her to get him.

As sad as it is all I remembered about the speech was that Leia said that he fought for her dad in the clone wars and, "Help me Obi-Kenobi. You're my only hope."

Too many people wanting to shit on Lucas' parade and find any miniscule inconsistency just to say they were the first to point it out. And to give a reason to be able to post - "Just further proof GL was making this up as he went along"... yada, yada, yada.
Why not sit back and just enjoy the 6 (well, 5 and a half) space opera flicks. They aren't meant to be scrutinized anyway. This is not Citizen Kane or the Godfather. These are supposed to be fun little adventure movies.
