Does BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK hold the record for longest album of new material?

I mean, WOW! There's 17 tracks on this bad boy! That's a lot of songs for a regular album - usually 17 tracks would be found on a greatest hits collection, but for a standard album, I think it was quite a feat. It was like a double-album on one disc.

What other albums are as long and as great as Blood Sugar Sex Magik by The Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Ryan Adams' "Cold Roses" has like 22 new songs on it although it is actually a double album in most countries except for in England where the limited edition is just one disc of all of the songs. Plus, he's releasing 2 more albums in the summer and fall.

I think the longest album of all new material I own in Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol 2". 23 "songs", average length is around 6 minutes. It's also one of the strangest albums I own...

if I remember from a time perspective, i think Blood Sugar... nearly maxes the amount of time that can be recorded on a cd

Perhaps you should have been more specific?

5 or 6 exceptional songs...a lot of filler.

Meh.

The Fugee's first album was about 80 minutes, and almost every track is excellent.

I guess I don't get the point of the post, since the length of media is arbitrary. Some double albums of old can now fit on one CD, and some single CDs now needed to be double LPs way back when.

The Cure Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me had to leave off a song (Hey You!) on the CD because there was not enough room and it also has 17 songs.

If we're talking about longest albums, as in length of total time, wouldn't we want to tell what the total time is for the albums we're citing as examples?

The Bus had the right idea. ^

Also, as I think someone else asked, are we talking about single albums? I think the longest album I have in my collection is Extreme's III Sides To Every Story which clocks in at a total time of 76:09.

If you're including multi-album, non-greatest hits, non-live packages, my longest one would have to be Prince's three-disc Emancipation, which, if you take away the three remake songs and just take original material into account, clocks in at a little under three hours.

Prince had to do the same thing with 1999 orignally. They left off D.M.S.R. so they could release the double album as a single disc. When technology caught up, they re-released it with the song back in place.

Not in my mind. Great album from track one on. I don't care much for Sir Psycho Sexy, but other than that one, it's green is go.

If we go strictly by minutes my longest "album" is Keith Jarrett's At the Blue Note, which won Down Beat's "Album of the Year" award in 1995 and clocks in at a bit over 422 minutes.

Only because they were released on vinyl. Blood Sugar... would probably be a "double album" on vinyl as well. The term double album is completely irrelevant at this point.

There are thousands of albums as long as Blood Sugar.... Someone needs to listen to more music!

A few long albums from my collection that come to mind...

Tori Amos - The Beekeeper clocks in at over 79 mins.
Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk is over 74 mins.
This Mortal Coil - Blood is over 76 mins.

If you count multidisc albums by an artist, Frank Zappa's Lather is 3 discs worth of material when released on CD and just shy of 3 hours long. Of course, that has an interesting release/nonrelease history and may or may not count. The Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs is also 3 discs long. (Yes, I know each volume is available separately, but it's not really 69 Love Songs if you only buy 23 songs, is it?)

No it isn't. I have it. It's two discs (the original listing on Amazon.co.uk was wrong and has since been corrected).

Metallica's "Load" clocks in at 79:59.
So I'm told, anyway.

Old school ;-P

On Vinyl, I believe Todd Rundgren - Initiation held the record for awhile clocking in at a whopping 68:11 (only 7 songs) ... The sound quality suffered. That is pretty lengthy considering most albums (LP) were around 40 to 45 minutes.

Any one know of any other lengthy LPs (not CDs)?

The Residents "Commercial Album" has 40 songs. Of course, they are all 1 minute long (designed to loop 3 times to form a commercial hit).

Pansonic's "Kesto" is 4 CDs of new material, and I think clocks in at over 300 minutes.
