I don't think that Peter Jackson is the most powerful man in Hollywood but I don't follow the industry closely.

Not to mention his Ghost House production company has been doing quite well with the Grudge and Boogeyman.

Otherwise...these lists are just some guy's opinion. I hardly think they exactly mean anything. Peter Jackson is ridiing high but I doubt he's actually more powerful then Steven Spielberg is.

Agreed, but I don't know what their criteria for this list was.

Yeah, but what's Sam Raimi doing? Making Spider-Man 3, 4, 5, 6? I wouldn't really call that power. On the other hand, Peter Jackson is practically getting a blank check ($20 Mil + 20%) to direct King Kong, which was a movie that Universal didn't have any interest in letting him direct prior to LOTR. And just look at the hype that's already building, despite the fact that nobody really knows much about it other than it's King Kong and Peter Jackson is directing it. For now at least, I think you've got to put him at least somewhere near the top.

I don't know, he's a director. I don't think a pure play director should be near the top of the list. (I know Peter Jackson gets does producing duties on his films, but he's not the one putting the dough out or making the deal happen).

A director is only as powerful as his producer and studio wants to let him become...so as powerful as Jackson is, isn't Stacy Snider (or whoever has the helm at Universal these days) more powerful?

Just my thoughts.

It's missing more than that. I don't understand why the OP wouldn't post the whole list.

I'll tell you why, because most of you have probably never heard of any of them. I listed all the notable names from the list. 4-9 were all Chairman COO/CEO of Hollywood Studios. Same for the others I omitted. Trust me; I listed all the notable names.

I can understand why Peter Jackson is #1. He's just gotten done directing a trilogy that made over $3 billion at the box office, each movie more than the last, nominted for 30 Academy Awards and won 17 of those, including Best Picture. Becuase of this sucess, he's been given a blank check and total freedom (not unlike Orson Welles). This translates into having the most power in Hollywood, at the moment.

Sure. Meet the Fockers capped off a banner year for Stiller, following Along Came Polly, Starsky and Hutch and DodgeBall (and the one hiccup of Envy, which was a long shelved movie that came back to haunt him). All told, his five movies earned $582 million.

Stiller's 2004 Box Office:
12/22/04 Meet the Fockers $279M
6/18/04 DodgeBall $114M
4/30/04 Envy $13M
3/5/04 Starsky and Hutch $88M
1/16/04 Along Came Polly $88M
2004 Total=$582M (not including Anchorman as it was only a cameo)

How Spielberg was ahead of Lucas is a mind-fuck! Cause The Terminal was such a huge hit and ROTS just made $50mil in one day. Not to mention that the guy owns god knows how many companies. I don't know how he's not #1.

Gotcha. I thought it strange that all the powerful people in Hollywood were actors and directors, the sort of people who have publicity agents. I had expected more people who actually control the money . . .

Jackson also owns WETA, so I'm sure that factors into his position on the list.

Again, amazing stuff you write.

You do understand that SITH made 50 mil on Thursday, while this list was created months ago.

Also... he's Steven fucking Spielberg.
