Weekend Box Office 3/18-3/20

Here are Friday numbers...

The Ring Two

The horror sequel earned $15.5 million Friday, a few hundred grand more than the The Ring made in its entire opening weekend in October of 2002, so we can consider this an acceptible first day. The Ring earned $4.8 million Friday and had an above average (for a horror film) 3.2 internal multiplier. With a much higher opening and sequel-itis at work, we can tone that down a bit to your standard horror multiplier of 2.7, which gives The Ring Two a very solid $41.9 million opening weekend.

Ice Princess

Disney's Ice Princess grossed a disappointing $2.2 million Friday. The film skews young, so it should have a decent internal multiplier, but the presence of other family-friendly films like Robots and The Pacifier don't help its cause. We'll be nice and give Ice Princess a 3.1 multiplier, good for a $6.8 million weekend.

Notable Holdovers

Robots drops an alarming 46.3% from a week ago, but it's not entirely the end of the world. It should recover nicely over the rest of the weekend to around a 35% decline.

Hostage falls 45.7% from last Friday and the Bruce Willis flop should have an overall decline for the weekend of around 40%.

46% drop for Robots doesn't really strike me as "alarming."

Well, most family films generally hold up better than that. And besides Ice Princess, there wasn't really any (new) direct family competition...hmmm dissapointing for Robots, but hopefully it'll still end up in the 125mill range, with a much larger international take.

Actually 46% is a very alarming drop for an animated movie. Even Shark Tale only dropped 34% in its second weekend.

Well, we're looking at Friday numbers alone. Shark Tale dropped 39.4% between Fridays. Ice Age dropped 43.4% between Fridays.

Ring 2 dropped a bit on Saturday, typical for sequels, especially ones that aren't particularly good.

Scorscese finally has a movie under his belt that's broken $100m, Congrats to him.

I don't see a Ring 3 happening, personally, but if there is... Man I hope they replace Ehren Kruger.

I stand corrected. Looks like Robots dropped almost 40% this weekend. Still an alarming drop for an animated movie.

It's hard to call 39.5% "alarming". I mean even the good animated movies usually drop somewhere in the 30's in their first weekend. Alarming would be 50-60%

If it's not Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks, I expect a big drop.

Ice Age made more than $40 million in its second week. Robots made about $22 million. I'd say Robots is a dissappointment.

Yeah, that's the way i see it as well. Pretty much only the Pixar films are around the 30% drop rate their second weekend. Robots is certainly somewhat of a dissapointment, but its not like a disaster or anything.

Yeah I am so surprised that Robots has been such disappointment. I guess families are at home watching the Incredibles on a Friday night and not seeing Robots in the theater.

I think that The Incredibles DVD release does definately weaken the performance of Robots. That's exactly how it was when I was a kid. Especially the first week of owning a movie, I'd watch it a good ten times. Of course, I was watching Die Hard movies, T2, and whatnot. But same thing.

Shame Ice Princess was such a flop...well, not really.

Does Miss Conegeniality 2 open next weekend? It should do a healthy Easter number.

I thought The Ring was a sure bet to open above $40M.

The word of mouth is going to fucking murder that little film called The Ring Two. It's not a "new" genre film where even if it does have a bad WOM, it's weekend-to-weekend drop won't go into excess of 50%, The Ring Two is going to drop hard. It's a sequel in which people expected it to be good, but the movie ended up being anything but.

As with every sequel, there are highered expectations, and it seems that The Ring Two is being a considered a failure to most people (in which it is).

If the film is able to pass the $100 million mark, I'll be shocked; but it seems that it'll top out around $70-80 million. It's not going to have the legs that the original did.

I'm surprised no religous movies were put out by Hollywood for this Easter weekend.
