While I used to enjoy Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys, and (very, very) OCCASIONALLY like something new that's rapped, I'd say that the best thing about rap/hip-hop is that the (so-called) artists shoot each other with regularity over stupid sh*t (hence doing their part to weed out stupidity).

I hope that this is just a phase that America is going thru, myself included. I'm not a big fan of rap/hip-hop, but i do find myself liking some of the new songs.

I just think it's sad that the likes of Mariah, J-Lo, and others can't seem to put out a good pop song anymore without having to mess it up by including some "rap crap" in with it. I don't think it's necessary to keep remixing good songs and adding rap to them.

Hip-hop's not dead and it will never die. There is a ton of great hip-hop still being made, but thanks to the homogeneity of modern radio, you have to dig a little deeper to find it.

It takes about as much time to write a modern pop-rock song as it does to find an old record to jack. If we're comparing the worst of the genre, let's compare the worst of all genres. I doubt that if you listened to some RJD2 and cunninlynguists, who are just a couple examples of creative samplers, you'd think it's anything less than an art. You might not like it or whatever, but undeniably it's creative, unique, and intelligent.

Rap music in its essence is about lyrical ability, which is why sampling is accepted in the genre. The artist isn't judged on the music behind them, but on what they can do with words. I would argue that the average Jay-Z song has a lot more lyrical complexity than the average Sum 41 song.
