Did Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese have a falling out?

Scorsese has recruited youngster Leonardo DiCaprio, but once upon a time, Robert DeNiro was Marty's golden boy. But since 1995's Casino, the two aren't paired anymore. Why?

It would be erroneous to say that DeNiro's best films were only when directed by Martin Scorsese - there was, after all, The Godfather, Part II and The Deer Hunter - but I think DeNiro's current career would be boasted considerably if he re-teamed with Scorsese.

Now, with the upcoming The Departed, why couldn't have DeNiro been cast? Did Scorsese and DeNiro have a fight?

No. They recently worked together on that Mastercard commercial. They can't make every movie together. Marty would rather beg for an Oscar now and Bobby would rather star in crap.

They just teamed up in Shark Tale. Anyone who has seen that fine film will agree that it's their best work since Raging Bull.

There was an interview with Martin Scorsese in one of the magazines here (DVD Review). He said he grew up with DeNiro and they made each other famous, but he said he isn't interested in working with DeNiro anymore now that he's in his "will sing for money" phase of his acting career, citing Meet the Parents and Rocky and Bullwinkle as examples.

I remember reading something about a year or so ago about DeNiro and Scorsese collaborating on a book about working together. It was supposed to come out this past summer. Anyone know anything about it?

Well, I don't really mind Scorsese working with new people. While he's had great success with De Niro in the past, I can't imagine every movie Scorsese does has a role perfect for De Niro. I can't think of any role in Gangs of New York that would've really suited De Niro.

DeNiro was supposed to play Bill the Butcher, but he backed out at the last minute.

That's rather hypocritical being that Scorsese is now using no-talent hacks and is selling himself out in self-mocking roles.

a list of no-talent hacks Scorsese has been slumming with in his last two films...

Leonardo DiCaprio
John C. Reilly
Cate Blanchett
Willem Dafoe
Jude Law
Ian Holm
Alan Alda
Alec Baldwin
Daniel Day-Lewis
Jim Broadbent
Liam Neeson
Henry Thomas

*Cameron Diaz has been intentionally omitted from this list.

Willem Dafoe is a no-talent hack?

Daniel Day-Lewis? Liam Neeson? Cate Blanchett? Jim Broadbent?

Why are they on the list?

Hmm, well, I suppose I could see that. Though, considering how Day Lewis made that role truly amazing, glad it went the way it did.

Scorsese asked DeNiro to be in Gangs of New York but DeNiro declined as he didn't want to travel to Italy for the filming.

They are still friends but maybe Scorsese sees (like many others) that DeNiro is no longer as committed to acting as he once was.

An unrelated question: why does Scorsese make himself look older than he has to? Hasn't anyone told him that those eyeglasses only look cool on Roger from What's Happening?

I agree on this one. At the Oscars he looked like he belonged in a rest home.

Not to take anything away from DDL's acting skills, but as I watched GONY I kept thinking Daniel Day Lewis was channeling Robert DeNiro as Billy the Butcher.

I liked her in that film because it was easy to hate her.
