How would your buying habits change if all feature-film DVDs (not boxsets) were priced at $50? I can't think of anything that I would have to own on DVD for that price point - I would strictly rent. Assuming prices were stuck at $50, which DVDs would you be willing to buy at that price point?

Well, I was accustomed to purchasing laserdiscs at $30+ a pop (that was after the 30% off from Ken Crane's) and was averaging between 6-12 a month back in the mid 90's with some blind buys. However $50 would totally eliminate the blind buy factor for me (probably 60% of my current DVD purchases which usually average 250-350 discs a year), and probably fall under the "will I watch this at least once a year" theory. That would relegate it to my 4.5 - 5 star ratings of which I'm usually pretty stingy in awarding (maybe 10-12 movies max per year).

10 years ago, bare bones laserdiscs cost about $35-$40 (and as much as $125 for criterions) and i had a very selective collection of roughly 250 movies. that was just at the end of high school when i was only making minimum wage part time. so i don't think it would affect my buying, im still fairly selective with only 350+ DVDs (and about 25 remaining LDs).

Kind of an odd question, I think at least, but in answer: I'd probably stop buying DVDs and strictly rent at that point. Well, until I get to the level of income I want at least.

And until Serenity came out on DVD.

Unfortunately I would still purchase DVDs. I bought laserdiscs before DVD killed the prices. Barebone releases usually ran $30 up and I purchased what I wanted to see. It would definitely slow the purchasing down, but I would buy the movies I wanted.

I would only a buy the "must haves". Basically the way I did it with VHS given the price of new VHS released back in the day.

Umm considering DVDs would cost $50, wouldn't that bump rental rates up somewhere around $15-20? I don't think I'd rent anything at that price...I'd buy the remainder of my 'must haves' and start collecting baseball cards again

Being that I am still in college and paying for my car, phone, school bills and etc...on a part-time job salary, I would have to say that I would find a new hobby if DVDs were $50 a pop. But here's another question, if DVDs were $50 a pop, how much would boxed sets be? And would you all continue to buy the boxed sets at whatever price range they would hit?

I could not justify spending that much on a single movie. I would just rent or watch cable (maybe not even rent...just do PPV).

I would'nt like it but as I use to pay between $60 & $110 for VHS tapes, My current shopping habits would probably stay pretty much the same.

I would rent a whole lot more...only buying what I'm sure will be a sure fire hit. I would also buy used a lot more.
