I have a friend that will lend me all the Buffy and Angel dvd releases.

Which order should I follow ?

Option 1:

Buffy´s Seasons 1,2,3
Angel Seasons 1,2,3,4,5
Buffy´s Seasons 4,5,6,7

Option 2:

Buffy´s Seasons 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Angel Seasons 1,2,3,4,5

or

Is there any special order to fully understand the spinoffs ?

Well ... I´m confused, but I suppose that I should watch the first three Buffy´s seasons before I jump to Angel - season 1 ... am I correct ?

That's correct, since Angel didn't start till after S3 of Buffy and there are some crossover characters that appear on both shows after that.

here's an order that will keep all crossover and points of commonality between the shows in the right order, and cut down on some needless disc switching.....

My suggestion is to watch one season all the way through - they work better that way - mixing up the shows like outlined in the post above, disrupts the flow of the season, wich is more important to the overall arc than a crossover. It can also get confusing.

Sure, but we kinda didn't have a choice back then. My point is that it works much better when taking the seasons in at once.

I also watched all the episoded when they first aired (starting w/ Buffy season 2), and as much as I enjoyed them, they worked a whole lot better on dvd the way I outlined above.

Yeah, it's no realy problem to watch the shows separately like slop101 suggests. With the exception of some episodes in Season 7 of Buffy and Season 4 of Angel, the crossovers are rather minimal. While it might be cool to watch some of these back to back, it doesn't really hurt to watch a season of one show before another.

Basically, you just need to keep an eye out for the crossovers, when stories are begun on one series and completed on the other.

BtVS 4, Angel 1

During the fourth season of BtVS and the first season of Angel there were many crossovers as the new series sought to establish an audience.

Buffy 4.3 The Harsh Light of Day --> Angel 1.3 In The Dark

Buffy 4.8 Pangs --> Angel 1.8 I Will Remember You

Buffy two-parter 4.15/4.16 This Year's Girl and Who Are You
--> Angel two parter 1.18/1.19 Five By Five and Sanctuary
Incidentally, these are four of the best eps in the Buffyverse, IMHO

BtVS 5, Angel 2

The fifth season of BtVS and the second season of Angel had no actual crossover episodes, but...

Buffy 5.7 Fool for Love and Angel 2.7 Darla played as a two-hour WB event, and the episodes are really best watched and enjoyed as a sort of two-hour movie.

In Buffy 5.14 Crush, a character leaves Sunnydale.
That character turns up in LA in Angel 2.17 --so take that into consideration.

And you must watch the fifth season finale of BtVS before you watch the second season finale of Angel because the Angel episode references the surprising events in the Buffy finale.

BtVS 6, Angel 3

Because BtVS season six aired on UPN and Angel season three aired on the WB, there were no crossovers or continuing stories between the two series.

BtVS 7, Angel 4

Angel season four episodes 4.10 thru 4.15 are a six episode arc that have (let's say) ramifications that directly leads into the final episodes of BtVS picking up with Buffy episode 7.18 Dirty Girls.

The fourth season finale of Angel ends with a development that directly leads to a crossover into the two-part series finale of Buffy 7.21 and 7.22.

Angel 5

Pretty much everything that happens in the fifth season of Angel has some presumption that the viewer is familiar with (or at least aware) of what occurred at the end of the Buffy series.

I would definatly Watch the Angel Episode Before the Buffy (when you get to season 4) because that way you will spoil less of the story lines.

I did not pick up the sets as they came out, as I am just borrowing them from a friend. Therefore starting with Buffy 4 and Angel 1, I just began watching one episode of Buffy then one episode of Angel. More or less just as they aired originally.

Holy crap. This is more complicated than trying to figure out the proper order in which to watch episodes of "The Prisoner." This makes me relieved that I never got into "Buffy" and "Angel."

It's easy to keep the episode sequence straight if you remember that Buffy led into Angel when broadcast, so whatever started on Buffy ended on Angel, but if something happened on Angel one week, it'd conclude on Buffy the FOLLOWING week.
