What concert have you seen that people are shocked you went to?

Thought of this take off on the other thread. I listen to hard rock/metal(mainly) music but at one point in time(late 80's) I didn't. People are always surprised when I say that I have seen:

Kenny G
Paula Abdul (with openers Color Me Badd)
Boyz II Men

and recently
Dixie Chicks (went with wifey)

Another time, another era. Young and dumb.

Anyone have a similar group people are always surprised you've seen? Or do you just not acknowledge it ever happened?

Public Enemy/Queen Latifa/Digital Underground/Heavy D and Kid N Play at a big tour back in the late 80's. (it was freakin' awesome)

BTW, i've seen Boyz to Men, too! as well as New Edition, Expose, Billy Ocean, etc back in the day.

Diamond Rio. My father got free tickets when I was a freshman in high school and decided to force my family to go, even though none of us like country music.

First "concert" I ever went to was in July, 1990 - Milli Vanilli, Seduction, Young MC

I've made up for it in the last 15 years by going to many concerts where the band/artists actually sing and play their own intruments!

Other runners-up that come to mind -
May 2004 - WBLI Jam featuring Avril, JC Chasez, Jordan Knight, Hanson (tix were free)
Summer 2003 - American Idol tour - Clay, Ruben, Julia DeMato , and others
November 2000 - Corey Feldman (ex-gf dragged me, but I was curious also). He closed his set with "Stand By Me".

And I don't know why I'm typing this - MV's first album is still a guilty pleasure of mine!!

Wow. Definitely a thread winner so far. But a frame of reference as to your normal musical preference would help gauge it though.

LOL - thanks! I was 16 at the time of the MV "experience"...haha.

As for my normal preference - my fave band is Cheap Trick, as I have seen em over 70 times. Some of the other groups that I've seen multiple times (on purpose!) are REM, U2, STP, Weird AL, Aerosmith, Kiss, Poison, Soul Asylum, Meat Loaf, Pearl Jam, Cyndi, The Who, Billy Joel, BNL, AC/DC, RHCP, the Foo's, the Beastie's, and the Crowes.

Vixen- I'm not into 80s metal at all, but it was free with admission to a local festival and my high school friends wanted to go. I was there for the rides and food, but stuck around for the music.

Probably Dolly Parton, just because most of my friends know my favorite band is SLAYER. Then again some of my co-workers were shocked that I'd seen SLAYER, because I don't come across like the stereotypical metal-head, which I guess I'm not.

There's nothing like opening minds huh?

Nothing shocking, but I went with my parents to see Neil Diamond in '83. Actually enjoyed some of it (not the hit songs from that time though... his older hits kick ass).

I won tickets to see Michael Jackson on his '88 "Bad" tour. I couldn't get any of my friends to go with me, even for free. I enjoyed it. In a goofy way. Ended up giving my extra ticket to this homeless kid (didn't know he was homeless until inside the arena). The guy started crying when MJ came out on stage. The he asked me if I like boys. lol

I shocked myself when I went with a girlfriend to see Jimmy Buffet. It was beyond my worst nightmare. And the Dead. The show wasn't so bad, but the fans were a detriment to the experience.

With my eclectic taste in music, nothing would shock the people that know me. One that's embarrasing is that, on a lark, a few friends and I went to see the Village People and Donna Summer(I think) in the late 70's. As one could tell from the other concert thread, I was a denizen of CBGBs and Max's back then into hard rock, new wave and punk.

I'm only 20, so I didnt have the chance to see a lot of shows you guys have, but I think my most impressive show would have to be seeing The Rolling Stones on the Bridges to Babylon tour on 12/5/97, with opening acts Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews Band, AND The Smashing Pumpkins. By far the best show I've ever seen.

I think you are missing the point of the thread. Based on your character what show have you seen that surprises people. Like I said, I'm a hard rock guy. Seen Metallica, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Tesla, Korn, Kid Rock, System of a Down... so when It comes up that I have seen Kenny G live, people are always surprised.

I think beavismom has taken the lead. Air Supply. Awesome!

Yeah, I'm pretty clean cut as well. I've floored a few people by telling them I've been to over 40 Phish shows.

Nothing wrong with that lineup at all (well, except maybe TEB) unless of course you are someone who listens to rap or pop music.

I frequent the jam band scene even though I don't have the typical hippie look. I took a friend of mine who usually listens to nothing but rap and Linkin Park to a Steve Kimock Band show and it was comical to say the least.

I went to see Daniel O'Donnell with my mother and my aunt. It was the longest concert I have ever been to. Literally. It started at 7:30, so by 10:45 I figured he was ready to wrap it up. He only took a break. He played until almost 1:00. He walked around the arena and shook hands with everyone who wanted, and stayed after the concert signing autographs for all of those who cared to stay.

I enjoyed some of his music, but not all of it. Liked the old country and rock and roll, but not the traditional Irish stuff.

oops haha, I meant to post that in the "What concert have you seen that most impresses other people?" thread. In that case, I'm not sure I've seen anything really 'surprising' given my tastes
