Best Documentary Series on Space-Travel History?

Any recommendations for a good series on the history of space travel? I'm thinking a BBC or NOVA type of series. The the more detailed and in-depth the better. Ideally, i'd prefer it to have more global coverage, rather than just 'American history in space'.

Thanks.

Not really a documentary, and only about the U.S effort - but anyone intereted in the origins of space programs must see the HBO 10-part series FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON. This is great film-making, solid drama, and historically quite accurate.

Thje Spacecraft Films Collection is an amazingly detailed compendium, if you want detailed and in-depth, believe me you will get it. Be prepared to pay for quality though.

However, much of it is not in typical documentary format, as in not narrarated or edited down for the casual fan of spaceflight.

Wow, I had no idea that much footage was available to own... 2-3 DVD's for each mission, that's pretty fricking amazing, Mr. Bigglesworth!

Thanks for making me aware of these dvds. This is amazing. Out of curiosity, do you have any/many of the releases. Which would you recommend for a first purchase?

I agree wholeheartedly. Probably one of the best Miniseries ever made.

I don't think that any one documentary series will do justice to the topic. For early, very early stuff, I think that Disney's "Tomorrowland" discs are a FANTASTIC start. I'd be interested in documentaries at or near the particular times they cover. So looking for 60's documentaries on space made during the 60's would be preferrable...which is next on my list.

I originally bought a 4 set mega-pack which included:
Apollo 11: Men on the Moon
Apollo 8: Leaving the Cradle
Project Gemini: A Bold Leap Forward
The Mighty Saturns: Saturn I and IB

You can get it right now at DDD for $87.82, which is a fantastic price, considering individually they go for around $30 to $35. (A 20% off DDD sale would be awful handy for this.)

And I later added:
The Mighty Saturns: Saturn V

I would like to get: Apollo 13: The Real Story (3 DVD set)

Another very nice DVD is the Criterion Collection's For All Mankind.

In the non-documentary side, I too love the From the Earth to the Moon series.

Thanks for the great tip. I don't make it a habit but I canceled my order at DVDpacific because it was back ordered. I've been compairing "specs" on various sites and there seems to be some difference in the number DVDs listed, however, i'm pretty sure now that this is a misprinting. I dont know how I missed the megapack on DDD but that price is too good to pass up, even getting it Norway. So, i'll start with the mega at DDD.

Its odd, as a kid I would have killed for these :-9 Dont know when i'll have the time to watch them, but i'll find it!

Jim
