That's tough.

I'd have to go with Purple Rain.

It is tough, but I'm going with Sign O' the Times

"Starfish and Coffee" is one of my favorite Prince songs.

Love both of 'em, but SOTT is a better representation of his range.

Those are probably his best 2 albums. I'll go with Sign just because of length.

Considering the vast amount of Prince's work that's available for scrutiny, why is this narrowed down to just two choices? Prince has several albums that I would say are better than either one of these, and neither album is really that good of an example of his true "range". A better example, in my opinion, would be 1999.

Anyway, just curious about the choices.

Purple Rain is better IMO, but most artist in the last few years have sampled or remade more songs from SOTT than any singular Prince cd.

I have to go with "Sign".

"If I was your Girlfriend" and "Adore" alone make SOTT a classic IMHO.

Ditto. Overall, I'd have to go with Purple Rain as the better album. It's consistently solid, whereas Sign has some songs that are just 'okay' IMO. This is probably a given considering the length. I do think Sign's best songs are better than Purple Rain's best. So I suppose it depends on how you judge it... which is best overall or which has the best peak songs?

Purple Rain by the slightest of margins (simply for having The Beautiful Ones), although I don't think either is better than 1999

I love these both, but SOTT because it has a better range, better length, and The Cross one of my all time Prince Faves.

I'd go with SOTT. I revisit if farily often. Purple Rain, while fantastic, always seemed to the CD that any casual listener would start with, probably because it's more accessible. As far as taking risks yet still keeping your interest, SOTT wins. Although, similar to what other posters have said, 1999 should also be on this poll.

I go with Purple Rain, but actually wish Around the World in a Day was on the list.

Purple Rain gets my vote, simply because of two songs, "I Would Die 4 U" and "The Beautiful Ones".
