When did Armand Assante become a B movie star?
He was in Hoffa, Judge Dredd, Striptease, 1492 Conquest of Paradise to name a few.
Some of those were bombs but now you can only catch on Cinemax Plus at 2am for some made for cable movie about a reunion with an old 50's Do Wop group.
Was he a bad actor?

He wasn't ever a big league player - the kind of guy people would come to see especially. The closest I can think of would be The Mambo Kings, and that was sold as a picture or as a showcase for the music, not a star vehicle.

And... Antonio Bandaras stole whatever limelight there was for the picture.

Loved Assante back in the Day.
The first big impression he made on me was playing an romantic French cad in Private Benjamin. Then a couple years later he was, IMO, very fun to watch as Mike Hammer in Larry Cohen's I, The Jury.
I'd actually first saw him in Stallone's Paradise Alley where he played a wounded vet with a cynical arc. But since he wasn't a marquee name, I never took note of him as a personality, just the character. Each of those early three performances and characters were separate and distinct.
His somewhat indeterminate ethnic background gave him a malleable quality. Coming out of I, the Jury, I looked forward to seeing him as a lead in more stuff, but his career seemed to stagnate while others started taking off.

I think he was a mediocre actor and got lucky for a while and then it ended.

Hot damn! I am loving all these 12/13 year old thread bumps. A thread bump a day keeps this site alive.
ETA: To stay on topic, I always felt he was what I might call a journeyman actor, someone who could slip in and out of different roles with ease (one moment he is in a musical biopic, the next a comedy, a comic book action film and so on and so forth) and regardless of the quality of the film as a whole could be relied on to provide a good performance.
