QUEEN to tour in 2005 - official news

Well, the news seems to be out .... Roger spilled the beans on his interview with the Wettendass Web-page gal .... so I endorsed it.
And this time it's not just a rumour. We are in the process of looking at venues for a QUEEN tour in the spring. It really all came about because of the Fender 50th Anniversary gig that I did with Paul Rodgers. We were both so amazed at the chemistry that was going on in All Right Now, that suddenly it seems blindingly obvious that there was "something happening here". And if we were to play together some more, which we both thought was an exciting possibility, who would be the drummer ??? Well, the expression "No Brainer" comes to mind. Then the UK Hall of Fame awards just came up out of the blue. Apparently we had won one of the categories and the request was there for us to play. I had already had the conversation with Roger at this point, about how brilliant Paul Rodgers was, and, since, very conveniently, he had also been asked to be there, we agreed we would ask Paul if he would team up with us for this event.
The rest in a way is already History. The show went so incredibly well from our point of view, and we got so many rave reactions from out there, we decided almost then and there that we would look at a tour together.
This is what we have been doing over the last two or three weeks, looking at venues, discussing how we might approach our collective material, etc. etc.
It's very exciting .... ever since the run-up to that Awards show, I felt in my waters that something big and scary was happening. Scary because as soon as you press the button for something like this you set a massive juggernaut into motion which cannot be stopped ! So bang goes the home life, and anything else we might have planned for the coming months. Suddenly the QUEEN Phoenix is rising again from the ashes, and will take precedence over everything in our lives. So be it. So there ya go. I won't go into more details right now, but, barring accidents, QUEEN and PAUL RODGERS will be on the road, pretty much for sure, around April 2005.

Huge Queen fan here but no Freddie no show. Seriously, they pulled this with the Doors a few years back. Some bands you just CANNOT see without a legendary lead singer.

How can it be Queen if not only Freddy is missing but also John Deacon?

A concert is the four individual members of the band performing their own original songs. If one of the members is sick, or in this case buried under so many feet of dirt for the past 13 years, it just ain't gonna work.
As someone said previously, there are certain bands whose integral members you just can't replace, especially founding members whose style, songwriting, singing and general presence were the heart and soul of the entire concept of the band.
Freddie is gone, and anything and everything they could have done to "keep themselves alive" has already been milked to death.
No Freddie = no sale.

I'd rather Brian and Roger go on tour together and they could play their solo stuff and sing the Queen tunes they did. That would be acceptable and I would pay anything to see that show. But to slap the name QUEEN on it is just wrong. I don't know what is up with these guys lately. They really started losing me when they agreed to have their songs placed in bad films, Viagra ads and that horrible Pepsi commercial they also star in.

I saw Paul Rogers playing with Neal Schon of Journey about 6 years ago. They did scorching covers of Hendrix, along with some of Paul Roger's classic hits, that were just amazing. That said, I guess I wouldn't mind them billing this as "An Evening of Queen Music." Of course, they could throw in some Bad Company classics, a few of the Firm songs and some Free tunes to round out the evening. I agree with those that stated above, without the original members, this is not Queen. Maybe they could call this the 1/2 Queen tour. I can picture that radio commercial already. "It may be only half Queen. But it's all Rock."

Paul Rodgers is one of the best out there.....having said that, I don't think any band should call itself Queen without Mercury singing lead. The Doors/Astbury mix did indeed turn out to be tons better than I would have guessed, but a Queen/Rodgers mix seems all wrong......I'd consider going just to hear Rodgers, though.

Journey without Perry was wrong, Styx without DeYoung was wrong, Boston without Delp was wrong, ELO without Lynne was wrong, Doors without Morrison was wrong, Judas Priest without Halford was wrong, CCR without Fogerty was wrong, and BY FAR, Queen without Mercury is wrong! I know these bands need an outlet to play, and they need to support whatever bad habits they may have accrued, but please respect the music and the name!

Mercury WAS Queen. The rest of the band was fantastic but without Mercury they would have never been as memorable as they are.
That said, a tour with George Michael should have happened sometime after the tribute show at Wembley. They sounded phenomenal together. I'd say it's too late now and Paul Rodgers, while a classic in his own right, is all wrong for Queen.

I think the best replacement would be Gary Cherone (from Extreme and Van Halen). Extreme's medley at the Tribute concert was amazing, and I thought the only one that came close to matching Freddie's style and range.
Having said that, I'd actually rather not see it happen at all....

There is NO BIGGER queen fan in the USA then me
and i agree with everything emhello said..you can replace alot of lead singers, but there is only one Freddie Mercury...need proof!watch the live aid concert...Freddie Mercury although lacks respect from most Rock critics in America..in my mind he is the #1 front man to ever hold a microphone...this includes,Plant,Jagger,Daltry,McCartney and all the rest...again,need proff,watch Live Aid...
that said!would i go see this,Probably...but id need an Album first and Ticket prices well under 100.00 each.

Benedict - I don't think I like the idea of Rob Halford in that group. It's like having Robert Plant heading up a Judas Priest reunion tour. The styles are just too different in my eyes. I'm not even sure if Paul Rogers is the right man. George Michael about the closest thing I've heard.
Tommy28 - Queen did an awesome job at Live Aid. I actually missed their performance when it first aired. Glad to see that Queen was kind enough to let their fans see the magic (also this was all the justification I needed to buy the set). I thought their Wembly concert was as good, if not better (more Queen = better).
