In 10 year Avril will be classified as an excellent candidate for a "Where Are They Now?" retrospective and possible Playboy spread.

Some of her songs (Complicated...) already are "adult contemporary".

No matter how she tries to twist it, she is pop.

That's what I think too, but I was wondering if anyone would try to tell me she's punk.

You may not even have to wait that long, she did an acoustic performance on MADtv last night.

Not exactly, punk rock.

With her recent prancing around during one of her concerts in full Hooters girl regalia, I'm guess the Playboy spread might be <10 years away. She said later that she didn't do it for audience shock as much as she enjoyed wearing it. Hmmmmm.

But her Maxim photo spread had no skin at all.

Yes. In five years, yes. In five weeks, yes. Now, yes.

I think she'll be in whatever category they put Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette & Jewel. Not that I think she's in the same league as any of them, but we're talking pure classification here. Is there such a thing as Modern Contemporary Pop?

As for whether she'll actually be around in ten years, that's up to her current fans, not to people who already dislike her. It's easy to say "She sucks, she won't last", but it will depend on if her fans 1) move onto the next big trend, 2) mature in their musical tastes and get interested in similar, but better artists, or 3) continue to follow Avril as she (assumedly) evolves in her career and (perhaps) eventually comes into her own as an artist. I'd say the younger fans will do 1 and the older fans will do 2, but who knows?

Personally, I think her stuff isn't bad as far as pop is concerned. From what I've heard at least, it's solid mainstream rock-pop. It's when they try to tell me she's punk or indie or whatever that it's annoying. Musically this rears it's head in the goofy "Sk8r Boi", which seems like a blatant attempt at mall-punk aimed at 13 year old girls and doesn't really fit in with anything else she's done. And compared to Ashlee and Lindsay (to name two other pop girls who have went down the rocker path), she's clearly a league up. She just needs to drop the charade and the wannabe image and concentrate on her music, if she's at all serious about it.

I also saw the MadTV thing, and thought she actually did a decent job. Of course, this probably has more to do with the bar being lowered so far down, I dunno. That and the fact she appeared to actually be singing, which has become such a rare event lately.
