From dangelosangels.com
For those that appreciate great music from all different genres, will really be anticipating this great one from the soul-man himself. It looks impressive. I can't wait til next year(another 5 year wait!!!!).
?uestlove dishes the dirt on D's album.
Questlove gives us the scoop:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
here the deal
11 songs are done.
most need lyrics.
most are in the 7-9 minute range
all are epic as fuck.
imo--most need a haircut.
shit i love
but shit i know the marketplace aint even ready for.
if "untitled" video is what got him over on the idiot side of things
he is gonna have to get his physical game back and come with some
strong ass imagaining to make up for the fact that there WILL be no radio
friendly single--
newbies im warning you now.....if you want to "understand" this record--you MUST
purchase and study the following:
-funkadelic
-maggot brain
-america eats its young
-cosmic slop
-standing on the verge of getting it on
-let's take it to the stage
-tales of kidd funkadelic
-there's a riot going on
-on the corner
-inspiration information
-smile
-abbey road
-revolver
-electric ladyland
-nevermind the bullocks here comes the sex pistols
-dirty mind
-on the corner
-ego

I think his ego is what sets his albums apart from everything else out there. He refuses to dumb down his music for mass consumption and I respect him for that. If he starts spiraling toward a Paisley Park level of weirdness, then I'll start to worry that his ego is out of control, but up to now, his first two albums have been outstanding (and reading a list of the 3rd album's influences, I'm getting really excited for it's release date.)

Man, that's some great news. I love Voodoo and Brown Sugar and have been waiting for this for a long time. Plus, I have the obligation to root for a hometown boy done good (Richmond).
I honestly forget: was it his decision or the label's to replace Q-Tip with Method Man and Redman on "Left & Right"? I'd assume it was the latter. Not that I don't like Red and Meth, but I'd much rather have Q-Tip's verse on that song.

I'm not sure who made that decision, but I thought Red and Meth came pretty nice on that. I've never heard the version with Q-Tip, but D'Angelo and Tip sounds like a good combination. I loved that old DJ Premier remix of 'Lady' with AZ.

Personally, "Left and Right" is a great song....Except for the inclusion of Meth and Red on it. It really hurt the album Big Time I thought. Everything is funky and chill, but the4y really hurt that song. If they wanted to do that on a remix, and have it not be on the album, I wuld have been fine with that as well. But not on the album. I don't mind them doing what they do(I'm not a big fan of their music--- if you even want to call it that). I sincerely hope that this new record will feature NO GUEST ARTISTS. O.K. its different if he's got ?uestlove on Drums or maybe some Wynton Marsallis on Trumpet, but NO RAPPERS ON THIS ALBUM......PLEASE!!!!
And to the person who asked who'd decision it was to go with Meth/Red, sadly it was D'Angelo's. The company wanted to go with Q-Tip, because they thought it helped keep the album more positive(which TheY was right). even LAURYN Hill asked him to consider taking there verses off the record to keep it more positive. I respect D for his musical abilites, but hopefully he learned from that.
Also, I met D back when he was on tour for the Voodoo album. I have got to say that it was the best concert I have ever been to in my life. I wore my "okayplayer" shirt, and D wasstraight cool, he jumped off the stage, gave me a hug, and saif, "thanks for the props man". At the end of the concert we made a banner that said, "Okayplayer". he said, "I want to thank my brothas from Okayplayer for holding it down all night...thanks fellas. Also, come on back after the show and have a drink.
D'Angelo was just so laid back, no ego. The world needs his music right now

Good story Dalvin. D'Angelo is definitely one of my favorite artists and I can't wait until his next album drops. A lot of dudes are dropping "Neo Soul" albums (I do hate that term) these days, but outside of Maxwell and Anthony Hamilton, none of them are really making a lasting impression.

Based on the influences ? is throwing around, this album sounds pretty damn interesting.
D'Ange fans, you should definitely check out this cat from the UK named Lewis Taylor. D (among other musicians such as the Neptunes) cites him as a major inspiration, in fact he wanted to work with LT, but the man turned him down because he didn't want to be pigeonholed as a Neo Soul artist.
His first two albums on Island, and his most recent, on Slow Reality are absolutely note perfect. If you like soul, check out Lewis Taylor (self-titled debut) if you like funk, check out Lewis II. If you like a little rock with your soul, check out the Lost Album, which may just be the finest thing he's ever recorded.
